This coming Wednesday, March 2, 2011, North Carolina’s “Susie’s Law” will be tested with the court appearance of Jimmy L Spears, Jr of Yanceyville, NC. Spears was charged with three felony counts on January 24 when three dogs were found on his property chained and huddled together in a dog house. All dead. They died of starvation.
There was not much in the news about this case. In fact, I can find only one small blurb from January 25 regarding his arrest. No more details were available. It wasn’t until this Opinion letter was found in The Caswell Messenger on February 22 urging people to become involved to make sure Spears is tried, convicted, and sentenced in accordance with Susie’s Law.
Sharon McDonough, the Pet Cemetery Mom of Selden, New York, pled guilty yesterday to the 13-count indictment charging her with animal abuse and child endangerment. She pled guilty to all the charges to save her children from having to testify at her trial.
She wasn’t motherly when she killed numerous cats, kittens, puppies and dogs; stashing the dead cats in the trash, and burying 42 dead dogs in the backyard of her home. She wasn’t motherly to her children when she forced them to witness the deaths of family pets.
Last night, Facebook was on fire over a report that a dog was trapped in a storm drain for several days. There was a post was left on the Fox5 Atlanta Fan Page that a dog was cemented into a culvert at a Dahlonega, Georgia Apartment complex and had been howling for days.
Once people started to crosspost this on Facebook, the calls started coming into the police department and Fox5 Atlanta. Seems Fox5 was somewhat humored by this and decided to tell callers it was all a hoax. But the callers persisted. At 4pm yesterday, the TLC Humane Society (Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Humane Society) got involved in the rescue.
A home is not complete without a dog. Including the White House. Dogs have graced presidential homes starting with the first president, George Washington. They ran and played on the White House grounds, ran through the hallways, terrorized staff, held press conferences, photo ops, and molded National policy. Here are a few stories on some of the “First Friends”.

There may be another attempt to bring the Johnson Twins back to trial. Baltimore prosecutors are holding a series of meetings to determine whether to retry the animal cruelty case against twin brothers Travers and Tremayne Johnson, which ended in mistrial. If the case is retried, it won’t be immediate. A May 4 date has been set aside at the city courthouse in case prosecutors decide to retry the case.
UPDATE 2/11/2011: Baltimore’s state’s attorney announced that the twin brothers accused of setting a pit bull on fire in 2009 will be retried. The new trial is scheduled for May 4 2011. YES!
For the past week the trial of Travers and Tremayne Johnson was held in Baltimore, with the jury deliberating for about 2 ½ days. Earlier this evening, a mistrial was declared. The jury sent a note to the judge indicating it couldn’t reach a verdict after they began deliberations on the animal cruelty charges against the defendants in the burning death of a pit bull named Phoenix.
Today the court heard the appeal from Stacey Champion, the Minneapolis woman who tried to send the 4-month-old puppy Priority Mail through the post office on January 25. Thankfully the court denied the appeal and Champion lost custody of the puppy ” Guess”.
Champion said she was sending the puppy to Atlanta to her son for his birthday, claimed she had a water bottle in the box, which was not found when the box was opened, and said she had holes in the box, which she taped over. The administrative hearing officer wasn’t too pleased, called her actions “disgraceful” and denied giving the puppy back to her.
She also requested to have the box returned to her for some reason, this too was also denied as it was still evidence.
I hate Michael Vick. I really do. As soon as I see him on the news, I just want to vomit. I don’t want to comment on him, write anything about him, or have him in the back of my mind. It’s kinda like I want someone to splash water on him so he can melt from existence. Just like the Wicked Witch of the West.
This came my way earlier via Facebook and grabbed my attention enough to comment.
This is the only attention Michael Vick should get. Not keys to the city. Not lucrative football contracts. Not his own reality show. Not awards for *Courage*. Not another DOG. No book deals. And God forbid, no movie deals.
Ohhhhh, what a world, what a world. Who would have thought that some little girl like you could destroy my beautiful wickedness. – The Wicked Witch of the West (The Wizard of Oz -1939)
La Plata County Humane Society is looking for the person responsible for dumping this tiny, emaciated puppy in a trash bin on January 28 in Durango, CO. As the flier mentions, he was found in a dumpster located behind Durango Natural Foods on College & 8th Avenue near 7th, dumped between the hours of 4pm and midnight.
Luckily for this sweet little guy, believed to be a dachshund mix and dubbed “Benjamin Button” because of his wizened looks and young age, he was found and taken to the shelter where he was immediately examined and cared for. Not much more than skin and bones, it’s doubtful the little guy would have survived very long.
