Kenneth, you make some valid points. I guess those of us who have developed an affinity for companion animals are just so repulsed by the idea of anyone eating them because it's like eating a member of one's family. And as for the fact that other animals are considerate an appropriate food source is just a phnomena that most people have just always accepted. In part it's because man's history as a carnivore goes back to the Stone Age. And I suspect that most people who eat meat have just never been exposed to any alternative lifestyles in which meat consumption is not the norm. That does'nt make it right. I would like to think that over time human societies will evolve to the point where eating any kind of flesh is considered taboo. It's a matter of winning hearts and minds. In time people will accept the idea that there is a better way to live.

What if there was a culture that kept cows as pets and ate dogs as meat?

Wouldn't a person from such a culture say "Even if they tasted great, cows are not for human consumption because they are companion animals. It is morally wrong to consume their meat in the same way that it is wrong to consume human flesh even if master chefs can make great tasting stews out of it. The objection isn’t taste-based but based on our common morality"?

Morality has nothing to do with arbitrarily assigning the purpose of pets to some animals and meat to others. If dogs have the right not to be killed for food, give me one non-arbitrary (not because we say so) reason why cows should not have the same right?

There are no ifs or buts. Either all sentient animals have the right to life, or none of them do. You choose. I chose that all of them do.

DISGUSTING!! Did you see that the three dogs in the picture are dachshunds? I have two dachshunds!! One wirehaired and one smooth. This man is sick. This is an outrage-the dog is not an animal to be eaten, it is a companion with whom you share your life, your love, your home, your food, etc.

Even if they tasted great, dogs are not for human consumption because they are companion animals. It is morally wrong to consume their meat in the same way that it is wrong to consume human flesh even if master chefs can make great tasting stews out of it. The objection isn't taste-based but based on our common morality. Yes, morals are still important even if so many have already abandoned them. Probably the greatest sin against dogs can be found in the Philippines and Korea where a vicious and barbaric dogmeat trade exists. At least in the Philippines, the government passed the Animal Welfare Act of 1998 to protect all animals from cruelty including dog-fighting. Enforcement could be better, but there is a fast growing political and social movement in that country to eradicate the dogmeat trade. The fight continues...As for Korea, I read that there was even a proposal in that country to legalize the dogmeat trade. What a shameful retrogression! If you Google " dogmeat trade, " you will learn about the extent of this problem and learn about those who are heroically fighting it like the Humane Society International and the Philippine Animal Welfare Society. They have their own websites worth visiting. Donations are most welcome which I give every month.

Dogs and cats are not for human consumption. No ifs or buts about it. People who try to make it look stylish or chic have a twisted sense of value.
