The responsibility of owning one that is so loving to humans can be overwhelming as often, they will attack other animsls thanks to the overbreeding of the mean ones. The shelters are full of them due to the fighting, killig other small pets, etc. Yet, so many are beautiful and so loving. If we can get the dogfighting stopped and the over breeding of these beautiful dogs, we still have a chance to save them. Unfortunately, as a retired Humane Ofice, I have been involved in three horrible cases involving pit bulls who were doing what they had been bred to do attack and kill. It was a horrible set of sights that I cannot forget. Other innocent animals being torn apart by pit bull pets that adored their owners but had the instinct to kill inbred in them and were rescued as pups unknowing that they would grow to turn on other animals. Three got loose and tore a horse up but we were able to save it afer high vet bills and weeks of pain. Until these kind of pit bulls are no longer bred or be allowed to fight and bred. the breed is going to have problems and not be allowed in certain cities. I have seen the terror they have wrought on the innocent as they are themselves. It is the irresponsibility of uncaring greedy monsters that breed these animals to kill that have given the breed a bad name by allowing them to be adopted out t the unwary public. Others are just fine and wouldn't hurt a flea but now, unfortunately most people do not know which ones will become violent. This is so sad for all loving pit bull that do not deserve this. And as horrific as the Michael Vick case is, if some good can come of it, then it may bring some solace to the souls of all the innocents who lost their lives for the cruelty of this man's 'sport.' If it can open eyes to the terrible plight of wonderful dogs, then at least we can say, with sadness in our hearts, that they have not died completely in vain! Justice will never be served but at least we can hope that lessons will be learned, if not by him and his vicious cohorts, then by society and law enforcement! It is a heartwrenching poem, but oh so true. So many people had no clue about this kind of thing until the Michael Vick case. A lot of people still don't know! I didn't even know what a pitbull was until we got Precious, and certainly knew nothing about their reputation. It's a terrible shame that something like this horrific had to happen to open a lot of eyes.
