Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it's my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Sadness of the Chained Dog Poem

I wish someone would tell me what it is that I’ve done wrong,
and why I must be chained outside and left alone so long.

They seemed so glad to have me, when I came here as a pup.
There were so many things we’d do while I was growing up.

The master said he’d train me, as a companion dog and friend.
The mistress said she’d never fear to be alone again.

The children said they’d feed me and brush me every day.
They’d play with me and walk me, if I could only stay.

But now the master hasn’t time, the mistress says I shed.
She won’t allow me in the house, not even to be fed.

The children never walk me, they always say “not now”.
I wish that I could please them, why won’t they tell me how?

All I had to give was love, so someone please explain,
just why they said they wanted me, and then left me on a chain.

  • Thank you, Deanna! Yes, no words can describe this pseudo- life.

This just breaks my heart, and makes me pull my dogs close for a ‘group hug’.

Hopefully this will be my only cry for the day. How anyone can chain a dog is beyond my comprehension. How are they to be loving animals if they are chained 24/7? This makes me want to take the 3 boys and lay down together either on the family room floor with all their pillows and blankies or in our big bed, where they enjoy all the comforts and love they deserve.

This chaining has to stop. Now this is just the push I need to get back working with my local village trustees, and with their help, get the state involved, and further down the road, nationwide chaining restrictions.

Those poor little babies. Wish I could take them all home with me and show them what life is supposed to be like, free from chains.

I know Susie, it brings me to tears too, every time! I have another one to share tomorrow, so heads up and this one I could barely get through. Not because it was graphic but you’ll understand when you see it. It kills me that people have no clue to the suffering they inflict when they stick a dog on the end of a chain and just leave it there it live of it’s sad life. :(

      D.

Thanks for the heads up D., but a sad story on a Saturday is sometimes better, cause the boys are all with me, and they can get their extra hugs and kisses and belly rubs! (and maybe a special treat)

This just breaks my heart too. Why would someone buy a dog and chain it? I have a shadow fence in the backyard and one day my two little ones couldn’t be found. I panicked. I went all over and no pups. Then when I went behind the garage again, I saw this white fluffy thing in the neighbors yard. They can fit through the fence. Well I will be putting up a block so they can’t get through. I stay outside with them, but they are fast. I will not put them on a chain just to keep them inside the yard. You make things work in your yard so you can be out there and they get their running out. I am also going to put this poem in my book. If I can wake up one person with my book, then I will feel I have accomplished something. Hopefully, I will wake up many people. Dogs need to run in order to get that energy out and sleep good. NEVER put your dog on a chain. If you plan on doing that, then let someone else have the dog that will love it the way it is supposed to be loved.

Oh but you are a good mommy to those babies! We went so far as to make them a “playpen” in the yard. Their play area is 75′ X 25′, and they just love it. Even tho it is fenced in, we are most normally out there with them, playing, and as you said giving them their much needed exercise.

  • MOEGO1

playpens work. chaining doesn’t. I know Susie, that you are a good mommy too.

    • Susie

thanks Moego1. Even if I am gardening, I can watch them the whole time they are in their playpen. They would rather I be in there with them, but weeding needs to be done, and I really don’t want their help to do that!

This was heart wrenching. I always ask why do people have dogs if they are going to just chain them to something. Why? Just to say, “I’ve got a dog.” Woo, big frigging deal, now let’s chain you up. I think that chaining/tying/etc of an animal should be outlawed. The only time that my dogs have been on a lead was when one time we took them to a WLS picnic with us and there were a lot of kids running around, kids with the group we were with and other kid strangers. We put down a blanket and laid down with them under a tree. We didn’t want them to take off, not wanting a kid to pet them without us being right there. I do not want anyone hitting/kicking/torturing my pet children. I would have been in jail if a kid had kicked one. Sadly to say, we lost one of our “boys” last October. Shiloh lost his brother, Casey, they were actual brothers. Shiloh still does not act right

    • Susie

slaplant84, I am so sorry for your loss. But remember that your little boy Casey will be with you in your heart forever, and he will watch over you and be waiting at the bridge for you. Shiloh is greiving, and it will take time for him just as it will for you. Give Shiloh a hug and a kiss for me.

I’m so sorry for your loss, RIP sweet Casey.

I wish I had the money to buy a prime time spot on the tv. I’ld run this non stop. Heartbreaking

Isn’t there a law against chaining a dog up now?

  • jen

Please look at the website http://www.dogsdeservebetter.com if you don’t know about it already. There are things that can be done to bring an end to chaining, but it’s along struggle like everything else. This is barbaric and needs to stop. Definitely, hug your dog today. You chose to bring him into your life, and he needs to be in your home. Thanks to all of you for caring!

Could someone please translate this poem into Hispanic/Spanish. None of my neighbors that have chained dogs can read English so I can’t talk to them or give them this poem. They don’t understand when I talk to them about the new anti-tethering laws for Texas.

    • Susie

Let me see if my daughter in law can do it. My Spanish is so bad since not using it for 30 yrs since high school and college, I would not attempt to do it. I will print the poem at work tomorrow and give it to my son to give her. Give me a couple days Cares for Pets. And a big thank you for trying to make your neighbors understand the cruelty involved in this.

  • MOEGO1

Slaplant84, I am sorry about the loss of your Shiloh. I know it must be hard on you and I am sure it is hard on Casey. I just rescued two little girls that are sisters and they both went through hospitalization for Parvo and I prayed so hard, because if one hadn’t made it, I am not sure how the other would have acted. They are like joined. I also had a guy that got two of the male pups our Lab had and after 6 months, one just died for no reason and the other is so lost. Animals do have feelings and I think even more so when they are related. Hugs to you and Casey and know that all of here feel for you. We really do care.
