When they’re puppies, it’s cute to see them beg and you can’t resist giving them little treats but begging can turn into a problem and there’s lots of table scraps you shouldn’t feed your canine companion. The more you give in to their begging, the more you reinforce the behavior. But what about if you have company? A whining, begging dog may not be so cute then and it really can be annoying to have every meal accompanied by a pooch’s eyes that won’t leave your food. Here’s a little help.
Make sure you start teaching the proper behavior and training early so you have a well mannered furry family member that’s a joy to share your life and home with!

Teach them as pups or when you first bring your furbaby home. Never give into their begging….makes it worse. They should not be eating human food (except banana’s and peanut butter….LOL). I, personally, can’t stand a dog that begs. Think about it. Most the food we eat, is not good for us, let alone our four legged friends. I am aware that a lot of people prepare foods for their canine friends, but this is not the same as letting them eat off YOUR plate or giving them table scraps of YOUR leftovers.
That’s right. Sage does NOT beg. She knows better. I do not give her leftovers or even bones off my steaks. She has her food and I have mine. This behaivor can lead to some really terrible illness’s or even have this type of dog (the begger) actually, grab food right off of someone’s plate! Happened to me once at a Thanksgiving dinner at a friends house. Owner didn’t do a thing to disipline the dog (stole a biscuit off my plate while I was holding it), and I almost set my plate down and walked out…..at a Thanksgiving Dinner, no doubt!
Ok Jess, I got the bananas and peanut butter – lol! Yes, my boys do beg, but only when I am cutting up fresh fruit that they are allowed to eat. When I am cooking dinner, they don’t beg, but lay on the floor by our feet as we eat. After we eat, they are allowed to sit near us to have their portion of fruit.
We taught them this as babies, but yes, when they were youngsters, they each stole something off the table. But they had learned from being disciplined for their actions. Knight once stole a platter of spinach dip, Bud took veggies off someones plate at a holiday dinner, and Max, well he took hubby’s dinner once when he went to answer the phone. Hubby was mad, and discussed this infraction with Max. He has never done it since!
