Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it's my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

This is all very nice, but I think Mr. Stein is just a tad out of touch. It’s as if he thinks unemployment is some sort of involuntary vacation. The fact is, when people lose their job, they also often end up losing their house, and because they can’t find a rental that accepts dogs they then face the heartbreak of having to give up their pet. In other cases, the dog gets sick or injured and the owner has to have it put down because they can’t afford treatment. This recession has been brutal for all of us, but especially so for pets of all shapes and sizes.

Susan, you can have a dog, no matter what. There are many places that except dogs and you have to eat don’t you? Well what is wrong with sharing that with your dog when all else fails. Just be cautious what you feed him/her. If you take care of your dog, then more than likely, it won’t get sick. There is always an answer when it comes to keeping your beloved pet. For one it will make you more determined to get another job. You don’t have to hold out for the almighty big bucks, just get a job. They are out there if you care to look. I have to totally agree with Ben. A dog is the best medicine there is for anything.

I think he is sending a great message….of course many folks are having trouble. If I had to decide between food for me and food for my dog, my dog would win..because he is my responsibility and has no choice…I don’t have the right to say I’ll eat before him. And he makes me happy and makes me sane in this crazy world….he makes me see what is important….

Great. Just get a job. Try doing that in this economy… and even if you can get a job, good luck supporting yourself on crap service economy wages. As for your animal not getting sick if you just take care of it, even the best care is no guarantee that an animal will stay healthy. I treasure my pets and would do anything for them, but I’m tired of weak platitudes from out-of-touch people, and even more tired of being told to smile while being stepped on by the corporate elite.

Great message , it can be toughed out in rough times , until you get a 600.00 vet bill .Their has to be common sense that if you do not have a job , do not acquire a pet as they need financial commitment .You can feed your pet for about 10.00 week if you have to , but one trip to the vet can mean the end .

  • I have to say, my Sasha has been my mental salvation through these awful times. When I got so sick and the news wasn’t good, she was right there beside me, offering me nudges at my desk when I cried, looking up at me with those loving, trusting eyes.

When we got the news that we’re losing our home, she was first in my mind. I know we HAVE to find a place that accepts pets, because there is no way on this earth I can lose her.

When she dislocated her hip a couple of weeks ago and was in so much pain, there was no question but that we were headed to the ER vet. I knew it would cost my entire paycheck that had just been deposited in the bank, and it almost did, but it didn’t matter. She needed us to make her better. When they ER vet ($800 later) said they couldn’t do anything and she’d need surgery, we kept her on the pain meds all weekend until our vet opened Monday morning. Their phones hadn’t even been turned on but for a minute when I was on the phone with them. Thank GOD for my vets. We’ve trusted them for 26 years, and when it came down to the financial end of the surgery, it went without saying that of course we could pay in installments. They just wanted Sasha to be better. Now we’re doing our daily physical therapy to try to help her use that leg again, since they had to cut off the ball of the hip socket.

But even through her own pain and this new 3-legged life, she’s right there every day with me. She comes to me at my desk 3 or 4 times a day now, which is new for her. She nudges my leg and makes me take a break from these grueling 16-hour days of working, just for some love, pure unquestioning love.

Just the 2 days she had to stay at the vet hospital were awful. The house screamed in the silence. Her favorite kitty, Trubble, was lost without her as well. They are truly the best medicine, no matter what the ailment is, whether it be physical or financial.

I know that one day my beloved hubby is going to need her even more, to fill the gap I’m going to be creating. I see him bonding more and more with her, though I didn’t think it possible for him to love her more. She just knows, and she’s making sure that he knows as well. With her eyes, I see her saying “I’m here. It’s gonna be ok.”

1st off……….Awww Bonnie, I wish you all the best. I love your strength and your husband’s as well. God blesses you every day with your beautiful Sasha and Trubble too (what an adorable name). I fear what you are saying, “the gap I’m going to be creating”. Sounds pretty dang bad and I will keep you and your family in my thoughts and prayers.
2nd…..thank you Susan. You are so right in everything you said. I do believe, you know what you are talking about.
NOW! As for you Moe…..your stepping on very delicate toes with your words. There are not as many jobs out there as you think. AND in fact, there are so many people out of work, most employers are being quite picky about who they hire and with good reason. The employee is hard up for a job and the employer can pick from many thousands. Believe me, my dear. After two and half years and well over 60+ resume’s sent out, and only around 1/8th of those resulting in an interview, I know for a FACT, even the most minimal job is difficult to get now. I’m not sure if you have been in the job market lately, but since so many have lost their jobs, you would be quite surprised how difficult it is to get a job now. Yes, years back, I could get a job in ONE day, but now it is quite different. Age and huge “language” barriers put a quick halt to getting a number of jobs these days. NOW….for keeping your baby’s healthy…yes, quite possibly you can, but accidents DO happen…..see the story on Sasha above….and those accidents can easily run well into the thousands!!! Think about that one and not having a job or a MINIMAL job, as you stated, (“the almighty buck”). Yes, I would and HAVE gone to great lenghts and been in tremendous debt to help my four leggers, but some can not, under any circumstances. Please Moe, be careful what you voice towards those of us out a job and doing all we can to survive and keep our baby’s safe and healthy.
Sory for the long comment ya’ all!

  • Jessie

Sorry to get on you like that Moe, but it does sound like YOU are working and really have no place to say what you did about the ease of getting a job……nothing personal, my friend. For the most part, I do like what you do to help and the things you usually say…..just got to me this time.

  • Admin - Deanna

Y’know, many time I’ll just post an article and let everyone have their say and that’s fine, usually I say mine in the post. I don’t get too personal about things here because this site is not for me or about me but there are time when certain things do touch on me and my life, this is one of them.

For more than two years I have basically been unemployed. sure I have a few ads here and there but trust me, what I make doesn’t even cover the cost of running this site. Luckily my SO had been pretty supportive and help when things fell short financially… that was until two months ago when he was laid off.

This is not the first time I have gone through financial distress, I’ve literally lived out of a vehicle for a period of time with my babies and they were what kept me going. Today, to a large degree, they still are, they and so many others that I feel like I help here. Also the friends that I have here.

So many people are in dire straights and I can empathize, trust me. My heart goes out to those who are struggling and who have lost and I know that it is a challenge to balance everything when you have so little to balance with but if not for my babies, I probably wouldn’t even care.

This is a difficult time, to put it mildly but I can tell you that without my Jezzie and Bruti, I might not have what it even take to fight to keep things going. If it weren’t for my friends here, I also might not. I am honestly not sure how long I can keep things going as they are but I will try because I have incredible incentive.

BTW, my SO drives truck which should be an easy job to find, not now, not today. Driving jobs, which not so long ago, drivers could write their own “tickets”… companies now call all the shots and alot of people out of work are now getting into truck driving and employers can snap these “newbies” up for very little which leave experienced drivers out of luck. No, it’s not easy right now, regardless of your profession….

So my friends, hug your babies, say your prayers, and hope things get better. I really do believe that our furbabies will help us in ways we cannot even imagine just by giving us the strength to push and fight if we can.

I’m not trying to say that jobs are plentiful, but there are so many resources out there. Create a job. We the American people take things lying down. What happened to EEO and what it really stands for? It doesn’t stand for % of blacks, whites, mexican or arab or an other nationality. It originally stood for Equal Employment Opportunity. It meant that if you and I and someone else applied for a job, it doesn’t matter who you are, but if you have the right qualifications. Age shouldn’t play here either, but unfortunately it does. If you go for a job and are turned away and you believe it is due to age, then file a law suit. We need to stop taking things lying down. We have all become so passive. I know it will work if you make it work. I am lucky enough to have a good job and I see things go on there too. I used to stand up for what I believe in and then got lax and just “took it”. Well here lately, I have started standing up again. It does make a difference. I see changes taking place. I hate what we have become as a nation and I hate that those in power dictate to us what will be. The little people get hurt from all of this and yes, we are the little people. That is why I say we have to Unite and start taking our country back a step at a time. We need to open their eyes and I know that is a hard thing to do, but we can’t give up. I have come to care about everyone on this site and know that times are hard for some of us, but we need to get our voice out. I hope you can all understand what I am saying. I try to support all the sites I visit by either buying something from that site or donating to it. I know that people like Dee do hard work to maintain their site and don’t charge. $5.00, $10.00 or whatever wouldn’t hurt us to donate to it. I am not plugging to make Dee money for herself, but it takes a lot to do what she does. We all need to take care of each other in some way, whether it be a donation or a bended ear. My intention was never to offend anyone or make anyone feel like they are losers. I don’t think there is a loser on this site. I just read on article on Parade.com about a woman in my community that lost her big paying job and refused to give up. Please go to the site and check it out. You can do what she did and be at home doing it. What have you got to lose? Dee, I hope I didn’t offend you in any way, you have become too important to me and I love what you do. Well, I guess I have rattled on long enough, please don’t think I am down on anyone. I just want to help where I can.

    • Admin - Deanna

Moe, of course you didn’t offend me and I understand what you are saying and how you meant it, I know you and know that you always and only mean well.

I didn’t put this video out there to get anything going but just because it made me smile and because I really do believe that for so many of us, our babies make the difference, that’s all :)
