41 Dogs Rescued from Home for Abused Dogs!
This about defies belief! These people, Cecil Edward Smith, 55, and his wife, Rosemarie, 66, Bowie County, Texas, were supposed to be operating a home to take care of abused dogs and instead they’ve been arrested and jailed on 33 counts of animal cruelty.
41 Dogs had to be rescued, many of them sick and malnourished from a house in Liberty Eylau. The remains of five dogs were also found and at least one dog had to be put down while deputies and animal-welfare workers were there.
“The majority of the animals out there scored a 1.5 to 2.5 — 1 being near death.” said the animal shelter’s David Warrick.
“In my life I’ve never seen animals kept in such terrible conditions,” Bowie County Sheriff James Prince said. “For somebody to be saying they’re taking care of them and to leave them in a kennel to rot is ridiculous.”
And now a Texarcana shelter has to find a way to provide shelter and medical care for the poor dogs and then to try to find them homes. They are in isolation now while they are being evaluated and cared for. An official with the shelter said that about 30 of the dogs seized rated very close to death, between a 1.5 and 2.5 on the body conditioning scale which is used by veterinarians to rank the health of animals on a scale of 1 to 5, with 1 defining near death and 5 showing the animal as obese.
“We want them to be adopted and get a good home, because they had a hard life so far,” veterinarian Ben Herdershott said.
They feel that some of the dogs will be available for adoption soon but others will need more care.
Bail for the Smiths has been set at $500 for each count. Cruelty to animals, a Class A misdemeanor, carries a punishment of up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000. The Smiths were booked into the Bi-State jail shortly before 5 p.m. Wednesday.
What an abomination!! The poor dogs, already abused and suffering, placed where their suffering was supposed to be relieved, only to be forced to suffer more, to be starved and neglected and live in horrendous conditions!
