Portuguese Water DogWell, looks like Michelle Obama has cast her vote for what will eventually become their newest family member, the furry four-legged one, a Portuguese Water Dog!  Not quite the “mutt” that Barak Obama said but Mrs. Obama said that they are going to try to rescue one that meets their requirements of age, temperament and fit.

“Temperamentally they’re supposed to be pretty good,” Mrs. Obama said. “From the size perspective, they’re sort of middle of the road. … And the folks that we know who own them have raved about them. So that’s where we’re leaning.”

But according to Mrs. Obama’s press secretary, Katie McCormick Lelyveld, it doesn’t sound like the decision is final yet, a disappointment to PWD enthusiasts who were excited when word came out as an “announcement” yesterday after Mrs. Obama’s interview with People Magazine.

“They have not selected a breed,” Lelyveld said. “Mrs. Obama likes the Portuguese water dog, but she is only one of four votes.”

“Their primary focus now is that they get a dog that works with their lifestyle,” Lelyveld said.

If they do decide on the Portuguese Water Dog, it might not be so easy to find one in rescue and says Mary Harkins, coordinator of rescue and relocation for the Portuguese Water Dog Club of America, it actually might not be the best fit for a family who has never has never owned a dog before due to the fact that they are very high energy.

This is also not a breed of dog that is very common which means you’re not going to find them showing up in shelters or rescues very often at all. Unfortunately for the breed, if this is the choice, you may soon find PWDs to be the next breed targeted by overzealous and greedy puppy millers because there’s no doubt that there will be a lot of people who will want to emulate the choice.   Guess there’ll be plenty of them at shelters after that when people realize they’ve got a non-stop ball of energy on their hands.  This is definitely one thing that bothers me.

The Obama’s may be looking for their new addition in April, after spring break and although some names have been tossed around, I don’t think there’s a consensus there either yet.

“Oh, the names are really bad. I don’t even want to mention it, because there are names floating around and they’re bad,” Mrs. Obama said. “I think, Frank was one of them. Frank! Moose was another one of them. Moose. I said, well, what if the dog isn’t a moose?” said Mrs. Obama.
