Why do people even have dog if all they are going to do is leave them in the yard or leaved them chained 24/7/365? This is no life for a dog, a companion animal bred to be a social, loving and loyal creature. This sad, pathetic story is yet another reason why dog chaining and tethering needs to be outlawed everywhere!! More and more locales are slowly but surely figuring this out but how many dogs need to suffer every day and die until everyone realizes the cruelty of this?!
And as sad as it is that this poor dog died, we may take some sorry consolation in the fact that its life of misery is over. What compounds this crime is that there will be no charges filed against the owners of the dog although a neighbor had made numerous complaints to the dog owner and the humane society.
No justice!!

OMG What the hell? That poor lovebug didn’t have a chance. No way to get free and drowned! How horrible. He died alone and scared. I agree D, they should outlaw tethering a dog and leaving it alone. I always tell my neighbors the following story when I see them tethering a dog and going off to work. Way back, a neighbor that no longer lives here (and they were super nice people), had their Corgi on a runner in the yard, and left for work. When they got home, all they found was an empty collar attached to the runner. Poor Jackson. He must have been terrified! He died alone, scared, helpless and unable to defend himself or escape his killer. Don’t really know what got him, but there are 2 mountain lions that have resided near here for many years, as well as coyotes and bears. Please folks…remember this story and keep it in mind, they don’t have a chance! They might as well be bait in a trap. In fact, that what I always tell these folks…your pet is bait for any hungry critter or other danger (floods), out there, alone on a runner or chain. I have no problem with tethering your pal while you work in the yard or whatever. As long as you are THERE to keep an eye on your little precious furbaby. Please, Please folks….DO NOT teather your best friend and leave them there alone! I will always remember pricious little Jackson….he was so cute.
Very sad story Jessie and I know that is just one of many like that. The thing about this that really ticks me off is that there will be no charges against these idiots for leaving their dog to die a horrible death! So much for justice… or rather the lack thereof!
D.
OMG ….i don’t understand how ppl can put their dogs out n then leave for the day. when i let my dogs out i check ‘em every 5-10 minutes. my friends alway tease me about this but i don’t care. i just wanna make sure my babies r safe.
poor wee Jackson. i will always remember this story, Jessie n when i see ppl tethering their dogs i will tell them.
o, another thing….i no longer let my cats out. there r hawks quite close n i know they can pick my cats up n take them away. plus there r those ppl who will aim their cars at them. THAT happened 2 my girlfriend’s cat just 3 weeks ago. if it hadn’t been for her neighbor who saw everything this woman would NOT have stopped…Cleo, my friend’s cat, died a horrible death…..
Jessie, your story about Jackson brought tears to my eyes. That poor baby. How people can be that stupid to think he/she will be all right is beyond my comprehension.
It is too bad that the owners of this poor little fella who died in the flood are not going to get charged with neglect and endangerment. There is no reason to tether (sorry Jessie, this is one thing I cannot stand, whether you are there or not). I see so many tethered dogs in my area, and it makes my blood boil. There are so many dangers in tethering, aside from floods, storms, and such. What about the little kid walking sees “a puppy”, and wants to go pet it, not knowing the temperment of the dog; what about the “rotten” teenagers who would think it is cool to taunt a dog who is tethered; what about a dog walking with or without it’s owner across the street; a stray dog; another type of animal (we have lots of fox and coyote in my area) – the list goes on and on. I am so tired of the laws on the books that as long as the dog has water and shelter, it is not against the law. Oh horse droppings – they just don’t get it! I have seen in rescue, poor babies who were tethered 24/7, from the time they were little pups, with the same collar they had as a pup, embedded into their poor necks, with such infections, it makes you wonder why the owners did not see it when they “watered” the dog. That is not being a responsible pet owner. That is a jail sentence for the dogs, and there were times that the infections were taking over the dogs bodies, leaving them in such poor health they could not be saved. By tethering, I cannot see any dog having a chance of survival at anything trying to attack it, and also, tethering a dog gives jerks trying to make a quick buck to sell your dog (or I cannot even say the other possibility) an easy access to your babies. We might leave the dogs out alone for 5 minutes till we get our jackets on, but leave them alone? Never.
Sorry, I went on a rant, but I will not tolerate any type of tethering. I am grateful we have a new committee overseeing our local government where I live, and one of the trustees is known to take in stray dogs into his own home and rehabilitate them in whatever fashion, then find good homes for them. Guess who I am going to be talking to in the next few weeks to outlaw tethering completely in our community?
Susie, you and everyone else can rant on this topic all you want. I have such a problem with this; chaining, tethering and backyard dogs! My babies have a doggie door and I watch them from my office window. I also have 6′ privacy fence with the bottom buried and a non-accessible gate. I am still not taking a chance because, like all of you, I actually love and care about the safety and welfare of my babies.
Those who don’t shouldn’t even have them!
Keep up updated on how those talks go, would love to hear!
D.
Oh I most certainly will D – I am even going to try and recruit him for being a foster parent with the many rescues I work with!
Susie you are so right. I only said tether if you are watching them, because, where I live (daylight hours only, however), I am far back off of roads, people, etc. So, when I’m downstairs, cleaning the yard (it’s a very small yard), I might…understand, might tether Sage while I’m working. Mostly to keep her out of everyone’s way. But, I do understand your point very well. I have to be honest here folks, Sage doesn’t need tethering by any means. She will NOT, leave this yard…nor, by any means, will she go towards the street. She was taught that as a pup and I can say I’m quite proud of her that she behaves so well. Yes, there have been times when people/dogs have been walking down the street and she barks a little, but does not take a step towards that area…not once. But, I do watch her like a hawk. I guess with all of us living in such different types of area in the world, that the way we watch our baby’s differs….slightly. Understand…slightly. This is a very small town and far safer to live and almost no crime (DUI’s, mostly). I’ve been here for 22 years. So, we do feel a bit safer here than most. No Susie, I would NEVER put Sage in harm’s way. Anything and I mean anything I do with her is closely supervised. She’s my baby. Please don’t be angry with me Susie. I wish you could see where I live. It’s obviously a great deal safer than where you or Deanna are. Maybe, that’s one of the reasons I find it so hard to move to a larger area. I feel safe here and so is Sage. But, I will NEVER tether again, for any reason, I promise! Take care everyone. With sloppy kisses from Sage and hugs from me…..Jessie and Sage
Jessie, don’t ever think I would be mad at you or Sage. I just see so much in my small little town, outside the Chicago limits. We have less than 10K people in our town, and I litteraly get sick when I see the beautiful little(big) babies tethered. I have mentioned it to some of the people I see with their dogs tethered, and they look at me like I am out of my mind. They just don’t get it.
Terry, I cannot imagine what went thru his mind at his last minutes. That is what makes me sick. I know Max is scared to death of thunderstorms, and needs to be held during a bad storm. (which we had last night). These people who had this little one don’t deserve to have any animal nor any children.
I know many of us are pissed off at the Humane Society with regards to all the pittis they put down a few months back, but they do have a very good package of literature on tethering. I would love to see it outlawed completely. Maybe if these people who tether would get 3 warnings along with fines, and they continue to do it, the dog(s) should be taken away, and given to a rescue.
We are having a new garage built, and a new fence put up for our dogs play area. I know that they will not have the freedom of their pen as they do now, but big deal, we will leash them to let them go out to do their business. And to be honest, if they had an accident in the house, I could not be mad at them – their whole play area is going to be a mess in a short time.
Jess – remember I am not mad. Like you said, we all live in different areas, and we all have to work around things dependent on our living conditions.
LIVE IN WV & THIS REALLY PISSED ME OFF BIG TIME. I NEVER EVER TIE MY PRECIOUS FURBABIES OUT ALONE I TIE THEM OUT TO GO POTTY BUT I AM ALWAYS REPEAT ALWAYS RIGHT THERE WITH THEM. I’D LOVE TO TIE THIS POS UP IN HIS BACK YARD 24/7/365 & LET THE FLOOD WATERS KILL HIM. I’LL GO NOW BEFORE I GET STARTED BIG TIME
I never understand someone leaving a dog teathered at all times , they are pack animals and we are in their pack. The elements are brutal , extreme cold , hot , rain , snow . They may be scared of thunder or strange noises .Can you imagine the terror of his last minute
This just makes me sick. This poor baby didn’t stand a chance. I let my dog out and she goes and barks to come in. I have an 8 foot fenced yard and she has water out there and toys and sometimes I spend time with her. She loves it out there and she is safe. I take a lot of pride in my Sage and want her to have the best. I also agree that tethering any animal is wrong. You can’t love an animal and keep them tied up. I just can’t stand hearing about any animal being neglected or abused.
Thanks Susie. Our town isn’t much smaller than yours, but we really don’t have any large city’s nearby. Reno, Nv. is 3 hours North and of course Bishop, Ca. is 45 mins south. That’s our little Mule town. Actually, the ‘Mule Capital of the World’. It’s about the same size as here. That’s where we go to get out of the snow and do our ‘BIG’ shopping…K-Mart! Would love to have an opportunity to meet you personally. You sound like a terrific person. By the way, I saw they have an opening for Animal Control in Bridgeport (1 hour N of here), our Capital seat. They pay well and you have experience! I know Ray, our Animal Control officer, for many years, just retired. It might be his job. Come on out! You would LOVE this area. God’s coutry and beyond beautiful. They do their best to never, never put down an animal here. They are so good to them. Oh, just a thought. Anyway, thanks for the note and take care…..hugs Jessie and Sage
This is the sadest thing I have ever read. Pet owners who do this are the most dangerous creatures on earth. The death this dog endured was a struggle. Imagine the terror.
OMG – what a horrible way to die and how sad. How can a person get a dog and then leave it tied up outside. An animal (pet) is part of the family and deserves to be in the house with the rest of us.
Gee the rain didn’t wake him up – did he hear his poor dog wailing before it was silenced?????
These people should be chained up outside and see how they like it.
I agree with all of you. Think of the terror and agony of drowning that the poor dog suffered. A tethered dog is completely defenseless. The owners should indeed be prosecuted. It sounds like all of you should belong to the DogsDeserveBetter(.org) group. The group is national and tries to get legislation that prevents tethering as well as help educating people to the dangers of tethering dogs. We deal with so many people who think dogs are “just dogs” and treat them like lawn ornaments so it is good to see the posts from you people who do understand the dangers and miserable existance of chained dogs.
what kind of dog was it:( how can someone do this to a poor animal! how sad:(
