I agree with all of you. Think of the terror and agony of drowning that the poor dog suffered. A tethered dog is completely defenseless. The owners should indeed be prosecuted. It sounds like all of you should belong to the DogsDeserveBetter(.org) group. The group is national and tries to get legislation that prevents tethering as well as help educating people to the dangers of tethering dogs. We deal with so many people who think dogs are "just dogs" and treat them like lawn ornaments so it is good to see the posts from you people who do understand the dangers and miserable existance of chained dogs.

OMG - what a horrible way to die and how sad. How can a person get a dog and then leave it tied up outside. An animal (pet) is part of the family and deserves to be in the house with the rest of us.

Gee the rain didn't wake him up - did he hear his poor dog wailing before it was silenced?????

These people should be chained up outside and see how they like it.

This is the sadest thing I have ever read. Pet owners who do this are the most dangerous creatures on earth. The death this dog endured was a struggle. Imagine the terror.

Thanks Susie. Our town isn't much smaller than yours, but we really don't have any large city's nearby. Reno, Nv. is 3 hours North and of course Bishop, Ca. is 45 mins south. That's our little Mule town. Actually, the 'Mule Capital of the World'. It's about the same size as here. That's where we go to get out of the snow and do our 'BIG' shopping...K-Mart! Would love to have an opportunity to meet you personally. You sound like a terrific person. By the way, I saw they have an opening for Animal Control in Bridgeport (1 hour N of here), our Capital seat. They pay well and you have experience! I know Ray, our Animal Control officer, for many years, just retired. It might be his job. Come on out! You would LOVE this area. God's coutry and beyond beautiful. They do their best to never, never put down an animal here. They are so good to them. Oh, just a thought. Anyway, thanks for the note and take care.....hugs Jessie and Sage

This just makes me sick. This poor baby didn't stand a chance. I let my dog out and she goes and barks to come in. I have an 8 foot fenced yard and she has water out there and toys and sometimes I spend time with her. She loves it out there and she is safe. I take a lot of pride in my Sage and want her to have the best. I also agree that tethering any animal is wrong. You can't love an animal and keep them tied up. I just can't stand hearing about any animal being neglected or abused.

Jessie, don't ever think I would be mad at you or Sage. I just see so much in my small little town, outside the Chicago limits. We have less than 10K people in our town, and I litteraly get sick when I see the beautiful little(big) babies tethered. I have mentioned it to some of the people I see with their dogs tethered, and they look at me like I am out of my mind. They just don't get it.

Terry, I cannot imagine what went thru his mind at his last minutes. That is what makes me sick. I know Max is scared to death of thunderstorms, and needs to be held during a bad storm. (which we had last night). These people who had this little one don't deserve to have any animal nor any children.

I know many of us are pissed off at the Humane Society with regards to all the pittis they put down a few months back, but they do have a very good package of literature on tethering. I would love to see it outlawed completely. Maybe if these people who tether would get 3 warnings along with fines, and they continue to do it, the dog(s) should be taken away, and given to a rescue.

We are having a new garage built, and a new fence put up for our dogs play area. I know that they will not have the freedom of their pen as they do now, but big deal, we will leash them to let them go out to do their business. And to be honest, if they had an accident in the house, I could not be mad at them - their whole play area is going to be a mess in a short time.

Jess - remember I am not mad. Like you said, we all live in different areas, and we all have to work around things dependent on our living conditions.

I never understand someone leaving a dog teathered at all times , they are pack animals and we are in their pack. The elements are brutal , extreme cold , hot , rain , snow . They may be scared of thunder or strange noises .Can you imagine the terror of his last minute

Susie you are so right. I only said tether if you are watching them, because, where I live (daylight hours only, however), I am far back off of roads, people, etc. So, when I'm downstairs, cleaning the yard (it's a very small yard), I might...understand, might tether Sage while I'm working. Mostly to keep her out of everyone's way. But, I do understand your point very well. I have to be honest here folks, Sage doesn't need tethering by any means. She will NOT, leave this yard...nor, by any means, will she go towards the street. She was taught that as a pup and I can say I'm quite proud of her that she behaves so well. Yes, there have been times when people/dogs have been walking down the street and she barks a little, but does not take a step towards that area...not once. But, I do watch her like a hawk. I guess with all of us living in such different types of area in the world, that the way we watch our baby's differs....slightly. Understand...slightly. This is a very small town and far safer to live and almost no crime (DUI's, mostly). I've been here for 22 years. So, we do feel a bit safer here than most. No Susie, I would NEVER put Sage in harm's way. Anything and I mean anything I do with her is closely supervised. She's my baby. Please don't be angry with me Susie. I wish you could see where I live. It's obviously a great deal safer than where you or Deanna are. Maybe, that's one of the reasons I find it so hard to move to a larger area. I feel safe here and so is Sage. But, I will NEVER tether again, for any reason, I promise! Take care everyone. With sloppy kisses from Sage and hugs from me.....Jessie and Sage
