Mothering instinct is a strange and strong thing, even in animals. Here we have a 10 yr old chihuahua, Mimi, who had her last litter of puppies more than four years ago but when she caught sight of the tiny orphaned squirrels, mother instinct kicked in and she adopted them as her own.
“I didn’t know what to think. They looked like rats at first,” Derek Varnes, who found the baby squirrels last week, said. “I wasn’t going to leave them. They say after they’re out of the nest or the tree, the momma won’t mess with them anymore. I wasn’t going to let them die.”
So he gave them to his finacee’s mother, Jeanette Young.
“My 10-year-old Chihuahua would come and watch me and start whining and carrying on,” Young said. “I thought she was going to eat them.” But when she put the babies down, Mimi immediately began to lick them to clean them and nurse them. Somehow, Mimi’s managed to produce enough milk to keep the baby squirrels fed and a vet told Young that as long as Mimi can continue to produce milk, the baby squirrels will grow and be healthy. 😀
