I have had a constant dialog on the Oprah message board and breeders are concerned that there is no legal deffinition of a puppy mill. They are afraid laws will ban home raised socialized puppies. Is it possible to make a law that bans dog auctions and sales of live animals in pet shops only? There is a so called breeder in souther Wisconsin who is breeding designer dogs and has been banned by the AKC. This person has 130 dogs up for sale between now and June 11 Almost all of these dogs have names he has made up because he is inventing breeds for sale at pet shops. There is a man west of Plymouth who has had people complain that they have had sick dogs, White Shakers Disease and also they saw dogs with open untreated sores. There have been fires at his farm that have killed dogs. He doesn't have a problem with small dogs being kept outside all winter. I have had 3 dogs in my life, one from a shelter one that was about to be brought to a shelter and one from a breeder I believe in rescue as well as breeders that don't have more than a few breeding dogs, but I don't think limits should be placed on the quantity of adult dogs to protect the breeder's rights to take back their dogs in case a home does not work out for them. This would only add dogs to shelters. There has to be a way to protect breeders and end puppy mills at the same time.
