Community Service for Dog Killer

Ok friends, we hear them all but every now and them one will just jump out and kick you in the gut and this one did that to me. On May 29, the Cavalier County sheriff’s office found a dead dog in a kennel, lying it its own feces and urine, starved to death. The killer, 21-year-old Derrick Skjerva was charged and pleaded guilty to misdemeanor animal cruelty for which he was sentenced to a measly 40-hours of community service and he cannot have any pets for a year.

Now, if this isn’t bad enough, his excuse was that he didn’t like the dog, only had it because of an ex-girlfriend and he only bothered to feed it once or twice a week because it was too expensive to feed it any more than that.

And to top it off, if he “behaves,” this will come off his record after a year!!

Can you tell me what’s wrong here?? This waste of human life starves this dog to death, a dog that suffered and long and painfully cruel death because shithead here didn’t like it and his sentence doesn’t even amount to a slap on the wrist!!

There’s something seriously wrong in Cavalier County, ND!! Oh, I forgot, he also has to pay $110 in restitution to the dog’s owner!! He was not even the owner of the dog he so ruthlessly killed!! OMG! This is just so totally and completely unbelievable to me.  Is it just me or do you see something seriously wrong here??

There is a story from greytexploitations that is almost as bad as the one mentioned above the culprits have not been found yet but if they are they will pay a steep penalty. This will be punished harsher than the one mentioned above. For further reading have a look at http://www.greytexploitations.com A greyhound bitch was found in the bushes of a roundabout in Scotland by workers who took her straight to the vet where she is currently receiving treatment for starvation and for being left in a black binliner she had managed to chew a hole in it. These workers showed a level of compassion that is not seen very often. This story is both heartwarming and breaking at the same time. It is high time that something is done to prevent such wanton cruelty within the racing fraternity. She may be an abandoned racing greyhound or a mix known as a lurcher. Either way no animal deserves such demeaning treatment from anyone least of all her owner. Sincerly Lisbeth Mønsted Larsen Greyhound Action Denmark.

Lisbeth, I saw that story… beyond sad. It’s amazing that she survived and continues to do so and that there were wonderful people out there who went beyond the “call of duty” to rescue and save her.

And yes, I do agree about the racing “fraternity.” There are horror stories all over the world about the depravity and abuses these poor dogs go thru.

    Hey D,

It is not just you, something is seriously wrong. We could start with good old Derrick and work our way up to the Judge, then the court laws that let the judge do this, and in reality, all the way up to the “world court” of opinion who do not see the cruelty of this kind as being “all that bad” when it comes to animals. THAT is the something wrong. Too bad Derrick’s mother did not feel the same about him, after all, food for children is even more expensive, and we would be shut of him. As for the judge, he needs to go back to “judge school”…or better yet, maybe human compassion training.

Thanks Peggy! I came across this about 2 in the morning and was just stunned. I admit, I have seem such pathetic sentences before, we all have but his excuse that he didn’t like the dog as the basic reason why he killed it and no one seemed to care. This goes beyond apathy!!

If they don’t get it, I sincerely doubt that compassion training is going to help at all. You either have a heart or you don’t and it’s pretty obvious that those involved here just plain don’t!

        Hi D,

I should have put “quotes” around my judge school and compassion training, so my sarcasm was clearer LOL.

Good old Derrick’s slap on the wrist is about on the same level as the woman in the Pendragwn Chow Rescue case..the dogs were living in horror, she got small fine, court costs, and cannot have a dog for 6 months or a year, I forget which. That’s it. In MI, driving with out a seat belt will cost you more…no kidding.

It will be interesting to see what the outcome is in Akron court tomorrow with the Carlisle case. I wrote the DA office directly. I am hoping that maybe MFA or other animal supporters will be in court to “encourgage” this judge to give more than a slap on the wrist.

I will be writing this ahole judge and asking him if this Derrick POS doesn’t like him and he kills him is he going to get two years probation, since he thinks killing is ok. Killing is killing no matter if human or animal. There are animals out there that have been killed for sport and society has more or less accepted that, but a dog. NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

It just is not right, if people kill humans then they get life imprisonment sometimes even death so surely people who can do the same cruel deeds to a helpless animal should get the same.
People can scream for help, fight back but not always win, animals cant ask anyone for help and cant fight back the way we can and more than likely will never end up winning.
I really feel so saddened by the world, people seem to think animals shouldnt have the rights as humans, but they feel pain, feel love, sadness and happiness they are loyal and devoted to their owners, we must be the voice for those poor animals.

    • Peggy Juliann

      Roxie

You are so right about that animals do feel all that we do. Just becasue they do not communicate in the same language that we do, we assume it is not the same. It is so sad and also maddening to see how little their plight is considered by man. We are their voice, their power, their vote, their protection. Thank heavens there are those, as the people on FTLOTD as well as yourself, who do care enough to speak out and to act. Obviously, this judge is not one of them. Wonder how he sleeps at night, wonder if the day will come when he is old and worn out and needs help, if his family will “not like him” and leave him to slowly die of thirst and starvation. Wonder how he will like that and what he thinks the penalty should be?”

WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE! WHAT KIND OF PUNISHMENT IS THAT FOR SOMEONE WHO DOES THIS AN INNCOENT ANIMAL!….IF I WERE TO EVER SEE THAT GUY I WOULD MAKE SURE TO LOCK HIM UP MYSLEF IN A CAGE SO HE CAN KNOW HOW IT FEELS STARVING TO DEATH! UGGHHHH! I HATE PEOPLE LIKE THAT! BUT THERE IS A GOD WHO SEES,KNOWS AND JUDGES IT ALL! SO THIS PIECE OF TRASH WONT BE GOING TO HEAVEB FOR HURTING ONE OF GODS ANIMALS!

  • alma

MY BAD I MEANT TO SAY HEAVEN! IM JUST SO ANGRY I CANT EVEN TYPE!

    • SHELLY CAMPBELL

That okay Alma I always make typos when I am PISSED off at animal cruelty in any way, shape or form, especially when they get off with a damn slap on the wrist!

  • Barbara S

Hopefully this killer will have to clean roads by picking up trash and hopefully someone will hit him with a car and maim or kill him. The least we can do is hope!!!!

  • SHELLY CAMPBELL

Ir is that none of these judges have any BALLS or they do not have any compassion for animals~you can tell the judges that care for animals and for the law to protect animals~the ones that hand down harsher sentencing, I think all the judges in these states and smaller cities need to get a pair of balls before their next animal cruelty case, this makes me sick, this sob should be locked up for a few years to ten with some big bubba that loves animals…he needs to be taught a damn lesson.

  • Pat

I read these stories that we are hearing way too many (similar ) and it breaks my heart. That kind of death was not a fast one but a suffering one. Where is the message in this, that it is acceptable, NO WAY!!

  • dru

wow…..FORTY whole hours!!!! $110 as restitution!!!!!! hmmm…makes u wonder why the ex didn’t take her dog with her. i hope this POS never spawns.
n judges who let these excuses for human let them get away with this sh**….well, i think it’s been said, lol. NO BALLS
