Jeff Ivey, Fire Captain of Petersburg Fire Department in Chesterfield, VA is at the center of an animal cruelty investigation after police found 8 dogs on a River Road property he moved out of only days ago. Four of the dogs were dead and the other four were emaciated and dehydrated.
One friend of Ivey’s said the dogs got little food or water and slept on the ground with no bedding. Wow, if that’s what a friend of his says….
“I can’t see anybody being cruel to animals. I don’t care what they are whether it’s a dog, cat or whatever. I don’t like it,” said neighbor, Fernanda Smith.
At this point it’s unclear how long the four dogs have been dead and there are many other questions as well. The surviving dogs are in the custody of animal control and at this point no charges have been filed but police say that could change.
Well I hope so!! Ivey is being called the “caretaker” of the dogs, whatever that means but to me that means he was responsible and if these poor dogs died under his care, he needs to be charged and prosecuted! This is a man in public service, supposed to protect and serve and care but he leaves innocent animals caged outside to starve and die! Seems like someone better get some answers and quick. There is no reason for something like this to have happened!
Let’s keep our eyes on this one and if anyone get more info, please share it!

Just watching this and some other stories of a similar nature makes me feel sick. How can anyone be so cruel what possible thing canthey get out of it? Is it a power thing or something?
I live in the UK, supposedly a dog loving country, but no doubt such cruel events happen here as well.
No punishment can be harsh enough fo the people who do this sort of thing.
these people say they love animals and can’t stand to see them suffer and that people who do this to animals are terrible, etc.. well, hello! they knew the dogs were not getting fed, they knew the dogs were thin and sickly. having that knowledge and not acting on it, isn’t that cruelty too??
First thing he should be stripped of his duties and then prosecuted to the fullest. He supposedly took an oath and he failed to live by it. What in the hell is going on in this world? Is there somewhere we can write? I want in on this. He is suppose to serve and protect and that means ALL, human or animal. Those dogs didn’t deserve to die.
Hear is one that will get you…..His stepmother and father run a non-profit vetinary clinic. Not only does his pay come from taxpayers…it looks like taxpayer dollars also go to assist in his leisure activities……SICK
TC Hairston is Fire Chief of Petersburg VA and this the fire department for Chesterfield, VA according to their website.
The phone number of the administrative branch of the fire department is:
Call Chief Hairston at the Fire Administration – 804-733-2328 and let him know that Jeff Ivey should be fired.
AND
email Mayor Annie M.Mickens at the Petersburg City Council’s email address:
petgcouncil@earthlink.net
Let’s all call and email and give the city administration support for firing Mr. Ivey!
Why didn’t the “friend” do something, especially before four died? Does that make the “friend” any better of a human than this POS when he knew that these eight dogs were being abused? Not in my eyes!
Thanks for that info Sarah, sure is a great place to start. I will be sending my emails and letters. Calling is out for me as I have a hearing loss, unless of course I can get people to not talk so rapidly and SEAK UP, which is what all of us should be doing over this. And post to all your groups and contacts too.
The local paper today states this Fire Chief has been ARRESTED and CHARGED. This seems to be a growing trend with firefighters! A few months ago in the news, there was the firefigher in Maryland who threw his girlfriend’s little Yorkshire out the window during a domestic and then last week in the news a FIRE CHIEF punched a 45 pound 6 month old German Shephard puppy named Karley 12 times with his fist and then pounded her with an 11″ rock so severely she had to be euthanized. There is a photo of Karley on the Web.
UPDATE on this sub species creature who walks among us.
Ivey was suppose to be in court Thursday, January 14 for his pre liminary hearing. That has now been postponed till February 25. He is out among us, rather than in jail, and here is a very nice touch. He is on PAID ADMINISTRATIVE LEAVE. With the postponment, looks like he gets another almost month and a half of paid vacation. Guess the moral of the story is, if you are out of vacation time, or do not want to use it, but still need your paycheck, just abuse animals or starve them and you too can have time off and your paycheck. Disgusting.
The two links below are to the WWBT,out of Petersburg, VA (an NBC affiliate). First link is the current (1/14/10) story on the postment. Second link is same source but on the orignal story. Great picture of Ivey too, may need that for our own version of America’s Most Wanted….coming soon.
