Dog Fighting Conviction Gets ‘Man’ Only 45 Days – Where’s the Justice!?
A Kalamazoo man, Leonard Turner III, 49, was sentenced Monday to 45 days in jail for dog fighting after authorities confiscated 14 dogs, fighting equipment and evidence of blood and fur spatters in a so-called fight pen.
“Many of the dogs suffered injuries/scars consistent with fighting; some in grave condition,” said a note in the court file.
Lightvoet was given six photographs of the fur and blood found in the pen.
“Abuse toward animals is not a good thing,” Lightvoet said after reviewing the pictures. “There has to be some punishment.”
In September, Turner pleaded guilty to a felony animal fighting charge under a plea agreement that called for a sentence of up to six months in jail. The felony is punishable by up to four years in prison.
In addition to the jail time, the judge ordered Turner to serve 60 days in the Kalamazoo Probation Enhancement Program’s work release program if eligible, otherwise to take part in the full KPEP program.
Lightvoet ordered Turner to serve three years on probation, pay restitution that is to be determined, and perform community service work. He is to not own or take care of dogs or any other animals.
Turner is also to not possess or look at any periodicals or videos of dog fighting, Lightvoet said.
The Kalamazoo native could have faced up to four years in prison on the dog fighting charge he pleaded guilty to on Sept. 24. One additional dog fighting charge and two counts of owning fighting animals or equipment were dismissed. (Mlive)
Like I said, a joke, not justice!
