Devlin CalhounDevlin Calhoun, 35 of the 12000 block of South Ridge Road, Conifer, CO was arrested after shooting his dog for taking some food off of his plate. The incident happened on August 12 and Calhoun was charged with aggravated animal cruelty and prohibited use of a weapon on Tuesday.

According the the affidavit, family members saw the dog snitch some food off Calhoun’s plate. His son put the dog in the kennel and told Calhoun what happened. After sitting on the couch for a few minutes, he got up, went to the kennel, removed the dog and took him into the meadow. Next they heard a single gunshot and the dog whining.

Calhoun returned to the house, put the gun in a drawer and sat on the porch listening to music and that’s where deputies found him after responding to a call the family made.

Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies said that his eyes where bloodshot, he smelled og alcohol and there were numerous empty beer. bottles around him.

When deputies asked if he shot his dog, he said, “Yes, I did.”

When asked why, Calhoun told deputies, “Because he ate my food.”

Calhoun was arrested and released four days later, after posting $2,000 bond and will appear in court on October 18. If convicted, he could face up to 18 months in prison on the animal cruelty charge.

And the dog? He lived up to his name… Lucky survived the gunshot.
