Looks like we got us another winner here! Forty year old Harold Riggs of the 7000 block of North Loomis Road, Coleman, MI was arrested and charged with willfully killing/torturing an animal and possession of a firearm while intoxicated.

Seems he got drunk Monday night and decided to take out his aggression on his dog who was chained to a tree outside. The dog was shot multiple times with a deer rifle. Even while trying to escape into its doghouse, Riggs continued to hammer rounds into the poor defenseless dog.

Police were called after the sounds of shots being fired in the neighborhood and Michigan State Police from the Mt. Pleasant post responded and set up a perimeter. After being given permission to enter the residence by Rigg’s wife, police found that someone has escaped through a window.

It didn’t take long for the police to find Riggs, led the the overwhelming scent of alcohol, hiding in his own backyard and that wasn’t the only thing they found. Lying chained to a tree, dead of multiple gunshots was an adult Lab mix.

”He was located a short time later hiding in the back yard, as the smell of alcohol on (his) breath gave his position away,” Sgt. Gary Green said. “After the first rounds the dog was laying down inside the dog house. He continued to shoot, while the dog, who was tied to a tree next to the dog house, had no place to go.”

Riggs was arraigned Tuesday in Isabella County Trial Court and is being held on a $5,000 bond. Possession of a firearm while intoxicated is a 93-day misdemeanor and could face up to four years in prison, a $5,000 fine and 500 hours of community service if convicted of the animal abuse/torture charge.
