Police in Gwinnett Count, GA want to find the person responsible for what they are calling a “gruesome” crime.  On the day before Thanksgiving, an employee at Party Time found the mutilated remains of a 1-year-old German Shepherd behind a dumpster at a strip mall on Pleasant Hill Road in Duluth. The dog had been dismembered, head, legs and tail removed. Only the animal’s torso remained.

Killed, Dismembered German Shepherd

A necropsy found that a stab wound led to the dog’s death. A vet wasn’t able to determine if the dog was dismembered before his death or after.

Investigators want to stop whoever did this right away and they are asking for help from the public.

“This was not an accident, whoever did this is a cruel and violent individual who must be found and put in jail,” said Lieutenant Mary Lou Respess, Manager of the Animal Welfare and Enforcement Center.

They say this is the type of behavior a serial killer demonstrates before killing a person, and while they’re not sure if that’s the case this time, they don’t want to take any chances.

“I’m concerned it could possibly happen again, to another animal or possibly a human also too,” said Gwinnett County Animal Control Officer Joey Brooks, who has routinely handled animal cruelty and neglect cases over seven years of employment with the county. “I’ve never seen anything like this at all.”

Dr. Melinda Merck, who performed the necropsy, is one of the nation’s foremost forensic veterinarians. She said the German Shepherd did not appear to have suffered prior abuse or neglect.

“It was not a stray,” Merck said. “There was good fat on the body, which leads me to believe that the dog had been well cared for, well fed and belonged to somebody at least recently.”

Whoever killed the dog is subject to be charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, which carries a penalty of one to five years in prison and fines of up to $15,000, police said.

Anyone with information about the crime is encouraged to contact the Animal Welfare and Enforcement Center at 770-339-3200.

Southern Cross GSD Rescue has started a reward fund to help find and prosecute the monster who did this to this poor innocent dog. Please help get the word out!!
