Has Justice Been Served for Sammy? VIDEO
Sammy, short for Samurai, the 15-year-old cocker spaniel that was dumped in a garbage bag, so neglected and malnourished that he couldn’t move or stand on his own, finally has his day in court… but has justice truly been served?
Last March Keith Morgan, 56, and Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, from Brick, New Jersey, turned Sammy into Associated Humane Society in Tinton Falls, saying they had found him on the side of the road in this horrific condition. Sammy was covered in urine and so matted that he couldn’t stand and emaciated to the point that he probably wouldn’t have had the strength to stand anyway.
It didn’t take long once sweet Sammy’s face became public through the strength of social media to find out that the “kind” couple who turned Sammy over were actually his “owners” who had abused and neglected him for so long that he wound up in the condition they abandoned him in.
Keith Morgan was charged in Tinton Falls with animal cruelty by abandonment of a sick or maimed animal and filing a false report with law enforcement. He was also charged in Brick with interfering with an investigation and animal cruelty by failure to provide sustenance and causing unnecessary suffering.

The couple was issued a disorderly persons summons and faces a maximum of six months in jail and $1,000 fine on each count. (source)
Now take a few minute to check out this video, you’ll see the life the Morgans lived as Sammy suffered under their neglect… you’ll also see the love and care that Sammy received at the vet hospital…
As months passed, Sammy was treated and cared for at Red Bank Vet Hospital where he was given the best care possible. Against all odds, slowly, day by day, he recovered. All the mats were removed and he was cleaned up, fed intravenously to start with but even at 15-ish, he was a fighter and it wasn’t long before he was struggling to walk on his own.
Now, just months later, Sammy is living the life he should have been, that all pets deserve. He has a loving family and furever home and even siblings. His road through hell ended and he’s enjoying his bit of well-deserved Heaven on Earth…
As for the Morgans… yesterday they had their day in court… a plea deal…
As part of the plea agreement, Keith Morgan, 56, admitted to one count of abuse of animal cruelty and filing a false report with law enforcement, while Shauna Ewing Morgan, 43, pleaded guilty two counts of animal cruelty.
“Finally justice was served … it couldn’t have been any better of an outcome,” Monmouth County SPCA Chief Victor “Buddy” Amato said outside the courthouse. “The dogs can now be permanently in their homes.”
Amato called the outcome a “win” and said they still faced up to six months of jail, regardless of the number of counts they were found guilty on, but ultimately their sentence would be up to the judge. (source)
The judge has ordered a pre-sentencing report before he hands down sentence. Needless to say, many of Sammy’s supporters aren’t too pleased with the outcome, with the fact they were allowed to plea down the charges or with the fact they weren’t sentenced right away.
“I don’t like the plea … I think they had an ironclad case,” Martin Mondoker, of Edison, who is one of the administrators behind the “Sammy the Cocker Spaniel” Facebook page that has garnered more than 25,000 followers, said. “He should have sentenced them today, end this whole matter, and that would have been it.”
So, although they haven’t been sentenced yet, what do you think… is justice being served for Sammy? I think it’s going to be just another slap on the wrist…
