When my mother was a teenager, their family dog did the same thing. A fire broke out in the house and he saved them by barking and hearding them out of the house. But the fire spread so rapidly her dog could not get out and he died in the fire. My mother was so heartbroken that she never owned another dog for the rest of her life.
