tonka-kittenWhen Galloway Township resident, John Malluck, let his 7-year-old German Shepherd, Tonka, out last Friday in the wee morning hours he has no idea that Tonka had heroism rather than “business” on his mind.  Tonka jumped the front yard fence and returned shortly with a surprise for John and Nancy Malluck, a 3-week-old kitten that some heartless cretin had stuffed into a ziplock bag and tossed on the road side.

Later that morning they took the kitten to the Atlantic Animal Health Center where Dr. Lori Nordt examined the kitten and found her to have low blood sugar but that was the only problem. With a little food, Zippy, as she was named, bounced right back and will be ready for adoption in a few weeks.

Luckily for Zippy, Tonka’s rescue came just in time, much longer in the closed ziplock bag and she wouldn’t have made it. The Mallucks aren’t really surprised at Tonka’s heroism as they say he has it in his blood. A police academy reject for being too hyperactive, Tonka was previously a bounty hunter’s partner

“….the guy that I bought him from used to be a bounty hunter and he used to take him out doing bounty hunting with him, so he definitely has some training,” Malluck said.

So here we have yet another heroic canine! Way to go Tonka!!
