Mayor Resigns Amid Pup-napping Controversy and Indictment
On Friday, Grace Saenz-Lopez, Mayor of Alice, TX, resigned the mayoral office she’s held since 2003, two weeks after she was indicted on on two felony counts of tampering with evidence and concealing evidence related to a neighbor’s dog.
Friday afternoon a petition was turned in to the county clerks office with more than 200 signatures asking for her recall since the highly publicized case in which she refused to return a neighbor’s dog that she agreed to watch while they were on vacation.
In her resignation letter, Seanz-Lopez apologized to Alice residents saying she felt that she was acting in the best interest of the dog.
“I am sorry for the division that the events of these last few weeks have caused,” Saenz-Lopez wrote in her resignation letter. “It was never my intention to bring any negative exposure to our city.”
On Monday a judge will decide who will have custody of Puddles, the little Shih Tzu at the center of this controversy.
