[...] Derick Phanord, 22, of Brentwood, confessed killer of Maximus, was arraigned Tuesday on a grand jury indictment that included felony animal cruelty charges. Phanord pleaded not guilty to two felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals, two misdemeanor counts of cruelty to animals, as well as weapons possession and traffic charges and was ordered by Suffolk County Court Judge C. Randall Hinrichs held on $100,000 cash bail or $200,000. Phanord’s attorney said his client “lost his control” because he was angry that the “vicious pitbull” had earlier attacked his other dog, Red, and blinded him in one eye. He said he plans to explore a “temporary insanity” defense. [...]

this is an ignorant man. there are far more humane ways of getting rid of a pet you don’t want. why did this jackass think that setting a dog on fire would be a good solution? what goes on inside this person’s head? even if Maximus was unadoptable and could not be reformed through behavior training, euthanasia would be better than being burned alive. i’m glad the puppy, Red, will not be living with this jerk anymore. who knows what would happen to it should it misbehave….well actually we do. this guy should definitely get the two years in prison. no question.

I used to bury my head in the sand like an ostrich, but no more. I used to change the channel immediatley when this type of horror was shown, but no more. We must all face it, and that will cause us to take action. I only wish I was there to stop it. I would have taken this dog in.

Phanord deserves the same treatment he gave to Maximus. Hopefully Maximus’ death will not be in vain as the public becomes more aware of the abuse to animals in their neighborhoods and will both individually and collectively step up to the challenge to stop these atrocities.
