Rony Salman who cut a puppy’s ears off a year ago received only a 90 day sentence for the abuse. And actually he will not be serving any time at all.
A year ago, AK, as the puppy was originally named, was found bleeding, shaking and pawing at his ears on a balcony of a Windsor, Ontario apartment complex.
Rony Salman, was been charged under the Criminal Code of Canada with seven counts including wilfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering, and injury by severing the dog’s ears; willfully causing unnecessary pain, suffering and injury by failing to provide veterinary medical attention; and willfully neglecting or failing to provide suitable and adequate care for a dog. He was facing six months in jail and/or a $2,000 fine and a two-year prohibition on owning another animal.
Salman pleaded guilty to three counts of animal cruelty, willfully causing pain to an animal, causing unnecessary pain to a dog by not seeking veterinary attention and failure to provide care for and willful neglect of a dog. He was sentenced to 90 days in jail but since he has been in custody for more than 45 days and was given credit – on a two days for one day basis by Ontario Court Justice Guy Demarco because of time the accused had served in the County Jail awaiting trial, Rony Salman, 30, will be released Tuesday.
But, in passing sentence, DeMarco said it was understandable the convict would have nothing to say because there can be nothing to say that would explain away Salman’s actions.
“What you did to a poor defenceless dog was an act of extreme and brutal cruelty,” said DeMarco, who was presented with photographs of the six-month old mixed breed puppy taken shortly after he was seized from Salman’s Sandwich Street Apartment, May 11, 2007. “I’m horrified.” (The Windsor Star)
The judge couldn’t have been too horrified to hand down such a lenient sentence. Just another ‘slap on the wrist’ for another animal abuser. And to add insult to injury, it seems Salman also likes to break into people’s homes. Wonder who his next victims will be?
