Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it's my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Players Back Vick – Portis Thinks Dogfighting ‘No Big Deal’

When I first heard about this I was so far beyond livid that I just had to back off from even writing anything. I have been on the Michael Vick dogfighing issue from the start. It’s another ‘VIP can do whatever he wants and thinks he’s immune’ type thing and it’s time these VIPs learn that they can’t! It’s time they learn they are no more immune to the laws than anyone else it. Michael Vick and his cohorts think they can inflict their brand of cruelty and abuse and neglect on poor defenseless dogs, he thinks they can pit them against each other in this horrific bloodsport for their own sick enjoyment and because he is who he is, he should be able to get away with it.

And now along comes these idiots saying things so asinine that people are just beyond stunned! Washington Redskins, Clinton Portis and Chris Samuels find this funny, think it’s some kind of a big joke!

Portis said that if the Atlanta Falcons quarterback is charged and convicted of being involved in a dog fighting operation, then authorities would be “putting him behind bars for no reason.”

“I don’t know if he was fighting dogs or not,” Portis said. “But it’s his property; it’s his dogs. If that’s what he wants to do, do it.” Portis said dog fighting is a “prevalent” part of life. Portis, a native of Laurel, Mississippi, added: “I know a lot of back roads that got a dog fight if you want to go see it. But they’re not bothering those people because those people are not big names. I’m sure there’s some police got some dogs that are fighting them, some judges got dogs and everything else.”

“Politicians,” added Samuels, who found it hard to keep from giggling while Portis was talking.

“Presidents,” added Portis with a laugh.

Dog fighting is a felony in Virginia, but Portis said that if Vick is charged and convicted, “Then I think he got cheated. … You’re putting him behind bars for no reason — over a dog fight.”

“Haven’t you seen Animal Planet?” Samuels added with a giggle. (WSBTV.com)

And then Portis thinks he’s going to make everything ok by backpedalling a little later. I think not!

Hours after making light of the possible crime in the television interview, Portis issued a statement late Monday through the Redskins.

“In the recent interview I gave concerning dog fighting, I want to make it clear I do not take part in dog fighting or condone dog fighting in any manner,” the statement said. (WSBTV.com)

I have a feeling that Portis is going to get alot of flack to put it mildly over his thoughtless and stupid comments. I spent some time reading a few discussion boards and people are not happy! There were comments like ‘Portis and Samuels are the ‘dumb and dumber’ of football.’ Now that made me laugh but that’s about the only humor I have been able to find in this whole fiasco!

When Portis says things like, “I don’t know if he was fighting dogs or not, but it’s his property, it’s his dog. If that’s what he wants to do, do it. I think people should mind their business,” it just shows his total lack of regard to laws and moralities! Does it make it okay then for anything that happens behind closed doors?? Should people just close their eyes and mind their own business to child abuse (after all if the child is ‘theirs’, it’s ok, right?), domestic abuse (same thing, if it’s ‘their’ wife, it’s ok?), drugs (same thing, ‘their’ drugs, ok?).

Well it’s beyond time for the public and law officials to show these brainless morons that it’s not okay!!

What do you think about this whole issue (aside from the fact that you’re probably about as sick of it as I am and just wish they would do something about it!)??
