Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it's my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

Probation for Man Who Slit Dog’s Throat

George KerrIn October of 2007, George Kerr, angry and upset over an impending divorce, took matters of vengeance into his own hands when he slit the throat of his soon-to-be ex-wife’s dog and buried the body in the back yard.

Guess the viciousness and cruelty of the unprovoked crime on an innocent and defenseless dog didn’t make much of an impression on State Superior Court by Judge Roger F. Mahon. On Friday Mahon sentenced Kerr to two years probation, 30 days community service and seven days in Hunterdon County Jail. Wow, that’s tough!

Kerr’s attorney cited lack of criminal history, the anomaly of the crime, the circumstance of the crime and a “low risk of anti-social behavior” from Kerr in the future and I guess the Judge was feeling mellow and basically let him off. Annie, the dog he killed was viciously killed and her killer walked!

Kerr was initially accepted into a Pre-Trail Intervention program, but the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office reversed the decision, citing objections from law enforcement officials and the Society For the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

Mading called the reversal an abuse that showed “a clear error in judgment,” but Mahon ruled that the decision should stand.

Kerr, a former custodian at Hunterdon Central Regional High School now working at an unnamed truck stop, was apparently distraught over his pending divorce when he admittedly slit the throat of his wife’s dog and buried the animal in a shallow grave behind his Holland Township home, according to court documents and testimony.

Court papers describe the dog, named Annie, as a bully-breed mix, an animal characteristic of a pit bull and its close relatives. Kerr’s wife, Laura, initially told authorities that upon her return from work the afternoon of Oct. 10, 2007, she saw her husband kneeling in the backyard — an unusual sight because his schedule as a custodian normally kept him out of the house until 11 p.m.

Laura Kerr also said she grew suspicious when Annie did not greet her when she walked into the home, according to court documents. The family’s other canine remained in the home unharmed, police have said.

Feeling uncomfortable, Laura Kerr dashed out of her home within minutes, authorities have said. Later, Laura Kerr contacted local police, who escorted her back to the home that night. When she arrived, her husband said “he took care of her,” in reference to Annie, according to a police affidavit. (Central Jersey)

Guess we should be thankful that at least he will have a record and was turned down for the Pre-Trail Intervention program but I’m not! Damnit, he should have paid for what he did and his sentence is no payment. Justice is yet again not served!!

Maybe we should let the Judge know what we think of the sentence he handed down! Our judicial system need to take crime seriously and stop handing out ’slap om the wrist’ sentences!

    rest, sweet Annie….
yet again….slapped wrist!!!! i’m sofly crying but silently SCREAMING!!!

  • I am begging anyone who wants to see these airhead judges that do not see the mentality of such a hateful inhumane crime and does not impose a stiff sentence to deter others from such immoral and sick actions on innocent animals to PLEASE WRITE THE JUDGE IN THIS CASE AND LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL. This is the only way to get their attention that this is a totally wrong and too light of a sentence for such a vicious act by only someone with a very sick mind that needs to be taken off of our streets for a long length of time and released only after intensive counseling. It is a known fact that all serial killers to date that have been convicted have some form of animal abuse on their past records due to their sick mentality as this guy also has.

  • The incredible crap that lawyers get away with:

    “low risk of anti-social behavior”

It never ceases to amaze me.

ONCE AGAIN I’M APPAULED THAT SOMEONE CAN DO THIS & A STUPID JUDGE LETS THEM WALK. WHAT IN THE H… IS WRONG WITH THIS PICTURE? THESE JUDGES NEED TO BE REMOVED AS A JUDGE. GOD PLEASE LET ME SENTANCE THESE PEOPLE AS I WOULD HIT THEM WHERE IT REALLY HURTS IN THEIR POCKETS,AS ANYONE DOING ANYTHING LIKE THIS SHOULD HAVE TO PAY A LOCAL SHELTER $500.00 A MONTH FOR THE REST OF THEIR LIFE. AFTER THEY FINISH THEIR JAIL TIME OF COURSE.
