adandoned-puppy-in-hamlinThis is one little puppy, a 3-4-month-old hound mix, that has had a rough time in its short life and it would have been much rougher if not for a woman with her own little dogs visiting a friend.

On Tuesday, Elizabeth Rivera of Newfoundland was visiting a friend when one of her two Poms, Gizmo, mad a mad dash toward a nearby ditch. Going after Gizmo, Elizabeth saw him investigating what she first thought to be a little lifeless puppy curled up in the freezing water of a drainage ditch. His little muzzle had been wrapped with duct tape.

Then she and her friend looked a little closer and the puppy growled a little. That’s when they went into action, rescuing the puppy from the water, taking it to Rivera’s salon, removing the tape and cleaning the little guy up. They warmed him and removed ticks, applied a salved to his muzzle where the tape had removed some of his fur, wrapped him in a blanket and kept him overnight.

The next day Elizabeth called around to find some place she could take the little guy to get more care. He was severely dehydrated and emaciated, weighing only 13-lbs instead of the 20-lbs he should weigh.

The puppy is now at Dessin Animal Shelter where he is being cared for and showing his resilient, spunky personality.

They would love to find out who left this puppy to die a cruel death, abandoned, with his mouth taped shut.

“Horrible, horrendous cruelty …You don’t tape a dog’s mouth shut without wanting it to die,” Humane Society Police Officer Marlene Metzger said.

Metzger and State Dog Warden Jim Rickert are looking for any information involving the incident, including knowledge of possible litter mates. Metzger may be reached at 647-0239, with all calls kept confidential. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender.

This is one very lucky little puppy, thank to another inquisitive pooch and a caring good Samaritan. Kudos to you Elizabeth for taking the time to care!! There is no doubt that the puppy will have a loving home as soon as he is well enough, call are already pouring into the shelter from people offering his a home.

As for the heartless monster… whoever did this deserves the same treatment!
