SC Senator Dumps Pregnant Family Dog

Pregnant family dog dumped by SC Senator WilliamsJust days before Easter on March 18, SC Senator Kent M. Williams called animal control and had his very pregnant German Shepherd picked up and taken to the shelter to be killed.

This is the kind of person we elect to lead?? A person who takes no responsibility as a pet owner, cared so little that he couldn’t be bothered to have this sweet girl spayed, then when she got pregnant, he callously and coldly just dumped her! What an atrocity!!Momma and her puppies at the shelter

On Easter Sunday this beautiful girl had a litter of eight puppies at the Marion County Animal Shelter. Luckily she and her puppies were pulled from the shelter and placed in a foster home. They were not killed and now all will have a chance at a much better life.

I am forwarding a request to write to the Senator and to local papers to vent your outrage over this despicable incident!

Following is the Senator’s contact information, contact information for local media and a sample letter that you can use. Please, get the word out and let people know. Flood Williams’ office and the media with letters, calls and emails!

Sample letter:

Dear Editor:

I am writing about a terrible situation that has come to my attention. Senator Kent Williams, District 30, coldly and irresponsibly dropped his very pregnant German Shepherd Dog at a local animal shelter. This is disgraceful on several levels: there is NO excuse for the Senator to have failed to spay his dog if he didn’t want the responsibility of raising puppies, and to dump his family dog off in a kill shelter to be heartlessly killed, or to have her puppies and have them be possibly killed too, is just heartbreaking.

Instead of dumping his dog in such a disgraceful and cold act, Senator Kent Williams should be working to fund spay/neuter programs at low cost for the community and finding solutions to the tens of thousands of young and healthy dogs put to death in South Carolina shelters every year. Any responsible person can see that the dog situation in the state is a disgrace and needs to be addressed immediately. The senator chose to be part of the problem, rather than be part of the solution. He should be ashamed of himself, and I hope he reconsiders his attitude toward this situation.

Regards,

Our ‘leaders’ should lead by example and if this is the kind of example they are showing, they need to be out of the office! This is not the kind of leadership this country needs!

UPDATE – 4/3/08 – Just thought I would share with you an email response from the Senator’s office:

“The following statement has been released to the media.

“Growing up on the family farm, I developed a love and respect for animals at a very young age that has stayed with me throughout my life. As a result I have adopted four dogs during my life, all of whom have been attended to and provided for with the utmost care. My German Shepherd was given to the local shelter for her own safety, with the knowledge that I would reclaim her if no one else did. Any suggestion to the contrary is a complete and utter falsehood.”

Kent Williams
Senate District 30″

Now I have to admit that I find his ’side’ highly unbelievable considering he turned the poor dog over to the shelter to be put to sleep. I saw the paperwork, there was nothing about him reclaiming the dog in the future. Besides, when you surrender a dog to a shelter, you cannot reclaim it.

Love this backpedaling now that the story is getting out. Guess he never expected that!

Senator Williams…. YOU ARE BUSTED!!

This is NUTS! Just look at that poor girl’s face – she looks so sad.

Thank god I can desktop publish. I’ll be adding that picture to my letter!!

God Bless the person who pulled her from the shelter.

He is inhumane. Does he not know about spaying. And a Senator. He should be ashamed of his self. Then to give your pregnant (PET) up for adoption. I think he needs to get a dictionary and look up the word pet.

Then he need to look in the mirror and see what a disgrace to his state looks like

I was so angry when a friend sent me this story yesterday morning. One of my first thoughts was ‘did the dog and puppies’ get out. I was so very thankful to find out that they did.

This would be a horrible story in any case but when you find out that it’s one of this country’s elected official…. that makes it much worse! I hope this story gets so much coverage that the whole country see what kind of a disgrace and pathetic human he is!!

And yes, her face and eyes are just heartbreaking! Williams didn’t even take her himself, he just called animal control and told them to get rid of her like she was just some garbage to be picked up and tossed!

What a poor excuse for a human, much less an elected offical.

  • I sent the letter to every newspaper you cited.

  • Rosa Mack

This poor excuse for a public representative needs to be removed from the Senate. His behavior is completely unacceptable!! In his position he should be setting an example for the people he serves, not busy crawling under a rock when his acts are exposed. How dare him dump a pregnant dog thats about to deliver her babies into a High Kill Shelter! If not for the Internet and a few caring people she and her babies would have been killed!!! Is this the type of uncaring person South Carolina wants representing them??? I sincerely doubt that it is!! Please think long and hard next time you go to the polls. If he treats his animals this way, whos to say the way he wants to treat you!!!

What a very sad example of the very real crisis we have in our state. Locally, both Richland and Lexington County Council’s voted to spend $3 MILLION dollars of tax payer money for a new fancy building for Project Pets, who won’t even take animals in from the public, but cherry picks only a chosen few for potential adoptions, INSTEAD of putting the money to better use in a low cost spay/neuter program proposed by Pets Inc. Pets Inc would not stand to benefit from their proposal, but have served the unwanted animals of our community for many, many years and never turn an animal away. They have the experience to make recommendations, and instead of LISTENING TO THEM, both county council’s voted to waste the money on a fancy new building!!! It is so sad and obvious that our public officials are clueless when it comes to the welfare of these poor innocent lives! It is time for change people!

  • This guy’s a poor excuse for a human being.
Vote hum out of office. He has no business
    representing anyone or anything good.

  • Merilyn Pickett

This is horrible!! My husband and I are petless at the moment but in a way I wish we weren’t. I can’t remember a time when we didn’t have either a cat or a dog!! I hope this Jerk gets voted out of office!!

    Sincerely;

This is unbelievable I feel very sad. He said love for animals all his life? Very phoney. All I can say is, when you do something so wrong like this. Beware, because it will come back to him in some form, in some way. You cant stop it Senator or not. And when it does I hope he remembers this terrible act. I think he will. This is a blessing in disguise the dog is better off in a home where she will be loved.

What do you people want? Everyday you read in the paper or see on the news, pets that are mistreated or just not properly cared for. Now the Senator can not care for the dog and the puppies, so he gives it back for adoption to someone who can. What is so bad about that? You know it is dog if you do and dog if you don’t.Everybody sees things differently, and I see it as a good thing that he gave the dog back. Come on he could have kept it and the poor dog really suffered. All of you that are so heart broken because of this, please give the poor dog a home care for her and the pups and stop tring to find wrong with someone else.Plesae adopt her,and she won’t have to be put to sleep. If we stopped and read over our own life we could probally find a little something that was not right. Senator, I feel you did the right thing. I woould not have wanted to see your name in the paper that you were sited for poor care of dogs. Be blessed.

Lavon, it goes beyond the fact that he turned the dog over to the shelter. He adopted this dog from this shelter and as part of the adoption he was supposed to have her spayed which he did not. He stuck he in an outdoor pen and basically left her there. She got out on numerous occasions and due to the Senator’s negligence, she wound up pregnant, then when he got tired of dealing with the problem, he dumped her, pregnant, back in the shelter.

State law requires all animals adopted from a shelter, pound and/or rescue be spayed or neutered. Marion County law requires that an unsprayed female pet be spayed upon adoption.

People found guilty of violating the state law, a misdemeanor, upon conviction, can be fined $500 to $1,000 and/or sentenced to 30 to 180 days in jail. Under county law, any person refusing to comply, upon conviction, can be fined not more than $100 or sentenced to not more than 30 days in jail.

Williams said he did not have the dog spayed because he hoped to breed her.

If she were spayed and made a part of the family, this whole problem would never have existed. Dogs are for life, not a convenience or a whim. They love and feel and you can be sure that she felt unloved, unwanted and uncared about. And one thing I do have to agree with is that it is a good thing, for the dog’s sake, that he did dump her because now she and her puppies will have a chance at a decent life with a loving and caring family.

    Deanna

  • I was appalled when I read this. How in the world can someone do that to a helpless pet? I know it happens all the time, but for a state senator, a leader to do this is just unacceptable. What a crock in his statement about giving her up. Does he think we are all stupid? He just didn’t realize this would get out. I Thank God for the internet and our ablility to bring stories like this to light all over the world. Thank You to the person that brought this story out and Thank you to the family that took in this beautiful Lady! Pray for people like the senator that are too stupid to look before they leap! And SC voters and animal lovers, remember this story when you go to the polls next go round!

  • cathy evans

T here is no human or otherwise excuse for the callous treatment of one of GOD’S creatures. How can you be elected? You have no feeling for such a precious pup or anything else for that matter. You probably feel the same about humans, making you so despicable. You should have been the one sent to the pound, a much better chouce.

  • Nicole Duggan

I agree this guy is an ASS!!!!
If he wasn’t going to be RESPONSIBLE and LOVING for his “furry” family member, what makes him the right choice to be deciding ANYTHING that concerns anything important for ANY humans man or women!!!!! I think he needs to be vetoed on ANY and EVERY decision he makes concerning humans or animals.
    He’s APPALLING!!!!!
Let him do something and see if he isn’t judged for it. He is not even at human status if you ask me!!

  • guilliam
