One of the many tax cuts Gov Schwarzenegger is proposing is one that has been previously defeated but I guess he hopes that Californians who are feeling the pinch will let it get through this time, is to kill animals at shelters faster. He wants to cut the hold time on strays and lost pets from 6 days to 3 days, saying it will save the state $24.6 million.
In 2004 this measure was defeated by animal loving Californians, will it pass now? Are Californian so desperate to close the deficit that they’re going to kill the voiceless, the innocent, the defenseless… just for the almighty buck?
“Obviously monies need to come from somewhere, but to do it on the backs of these animals is just really sad,” Kiska Icard, a spokeswoman for the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said.
Shelter animals have so little chance now, they are killed daily by the thousands. This fine thread of hope is all so many have and now he wants to take this away.
Oh, and don’t forget his attempt tax vet care as a “luxury” item either. Schwarzenegger doesn’t seem to like animals and pets very much, does he? Use them to make or save money, forget they are living, breathing, feeling creatures!
And not only will California animals and pets suffer, his cuts will also hit of segments of society that can take the hit the least; the elderly, schools, children, disabled. But he seems to have no problem with the $4-5 billion annually that goes to illegal immigrants.

Sure, don’t support our own but let us support someone else’s. I am not turning this into an illegal immigrant slam, don’t get me wrong here, what I am saying is that there’s a serious priority problem with this. Why should America’s elderly, disabled, children and pets suffer while we support the health care and education system for illegal immigrants? Schwarzenegger’s answer is that they pick crops and build buildings….. hunh?
Now, please don’t turn this into an illegal immigrant comment rant. That’s not the point. The point is the killing of innocents which is going to escalate to unbelievable numbers if his proposal goes through. The point is that it’s going to affect the most needy elements of society who are voiceless as well as those people who in many cases have no other options, children, disabled and elderly. The point is balance, priorities, fairness!
I guess “kick’em when they’re already down” is gonna be Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s new motto for California. Hope you are hearing this Californians!!

Well D….you know how I feel about the illigal immigrant stuff..being in the situation I am in California, so, as you said, I will not go there. However, my BFF Kathy and I already jumped on the band wagon re: the tax increase for vets and basically had the door slammed in our face. THIS, is over the top! This POS governor of ours is truly a jackass and obviously despises animals. I only wish some tragedy would befall him and put him 8 feet under….yes, 8. Don’t want him crawling out…..no how…no way. I do despise this man and we have tried voting him out and there the turd sits! One problem, is those “illigals” you speak of, somehow are able to get their “illegal” vote in as well, and if you knew how many were here, well, it explains why this POS is still in office. Have no idea how to get him out of our state except as stated above. You know I will be contacting this POS again, but his little 20 yr old secretary’s don’t give a damn about animals either and surely we don’t get any response when we contact that asshole. Yes, I do wish him the worst and nothing good in his miserable life. These poor shelter animals will have NO chance now. Lord…..I’m sorry to say such horrible things re: a living being, but……….. Public pressure, as well as his own daughters pressure (I thought) squashed his proposal in 2004. This is so very sad, he would sell out his own. Great comment about the comparisons of costs for immigrants. He is selling out his own and we have to let him have it where he hurts. Cruelty to critters is unforgivable.
After reading this, I emailed the governor begging him not to do this, saying that despite the fact that California has some of the most pet-friendly cities in the nation, such legislation will really make animal lovers think twice before spending their tourism dollars there

Does anyone rememeber that horrible piece of trash moveie Conan the Barbarian that Arnold S made when he was young. In that moveie he hit a camel or a horse(it was long time ago) and knocked it out cold, possibly breaking it’s jaws.
What is happening in CA? This is truly a sin in the worst form. He should be removed from office and deported. I can’t even believe he is a Governor of anything. Animals have rights and illegal immigrants shouldn’t have any right to vote on anything. These immigrants are what is causing the destruction of this United States. I hope everyone reading this understands UNITED STATES. United we conquer and divided we fall. So let’s not fall. I can only pray that Californians do the right thing. The people of this country deserve far better than what they are getting from these low life politicians. I will pray to God that these animals don’t have to go through the hell he is about to try and put them through. Next if this passes he will want to kill all the elderly because he will feel there is no purpose for them. He needs to be stopped and it has to be now. He has the thought that he is untouchable. If this bill passes I think you will see more disasters in Californian, courtesy of God.

I chose the tourism angle because that was one of the main ways we in Pennsylvania were able to bring pressure on businesses and tourism groups in Lancaster County to get on the right side of cleaning up our state’s hideous puppy mills

It’s unfortunate that Arnold’s predecessor,Gray Davis, was such a dismal failure. People were so fed up with Davis’ incompetence they might have taken a chance with just about anybody. Since animals can’t vote A.S. just considers them ‘collateral damage’. If only enough advocates for animals could get together to form a voting block maybe they could get rid of him.

Thank you for the e-mail address. Ran into a woman at the Equestrian center on Tuesday. Said she has worked with his kids (horse things) and that we are going about this the wrong way. When I told her he hates animals, she said his kids have horses and his wife, Shriver (sp) is the one we should be seking out for this. She’s the one that truly cares about the animals and would probably push him into not doing this. Hmmm….anyone out there know how to get a hold of her? No, I was not with this woman at the ranch long enough to get more info from her. She was in and out and that was all the info I got. She only said, we need to go through his wife to get action. On the Vet tax increase, she said that will NEVER happen…..we can only hope.

I had emailed this POS when this issue first surfaced. Here was the response I received. Of course it’s not from him personally, but some canned response his staff has waiting for anyone who tries to speak up about this. Bottom line…..he doesn’t CARE.

Thank you for sharing your concerns with me about the proposal to lift restrictions on hold times at animal shelters. I value your input during these challenging economic times.
As you know, we are in the midst of the greatest economic crisis since the Great Depression. We now face a budget shortfall that has grown to $24.3 billion. I have proposed cuts that I would have never proposed except in a worst-case scenario, including eliminating General Fund support for programs like Healthy Families, CalWORKs, Cal Grants and State Parks. This was not an easy decision for me. As a dog owner myself, I have always supported animal welfare and have worked to ensure the humane treatment of animals.
Currently, the state requires all shelters to hold stray animals for four or six days and reimburses them for the associated costs. To address our budget crisis, I have proposed to suspend some Non-Proposition 98 mandates, including the reimbursement funds for these shelters. To help local shelters deal with the challenges of this difficult budget situation, I have also proposed that the state no longer require the four or six day hold time. Shelters still have the flexibility to keep the animals for more days, but my proposal avoids placing an unnecessary burden on local communities.
As I work with my partners in the Legislature to find solutions to these problems, know that I will keep your thoughts in mind. Working together, I believe we can weather this storm and start the slow but steady march back toward prosperity.
