Passionate when it comes to my canine companions as well as dogs everywhere, it's my mission to raise awareness of any issues that affect them, from their health, food and nutrition and training to their welfare. Canine advocacy is something that everyone who cares about dogs needs to be aware of and we all need to share that and raise our voice for those who cannot speak for themselves.

SCLC To Honor Vick At Atlanta Convention

To me this is just so far beyond belief to be unconscionable! Why would the SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Conference) honor Michael Vick and why now? Because he is under indictment for the cruel and vicious crime of dogfighting? Whether the man is innocent of guilty of the allegations against him, many of his past actions alone would preclude him from being honored for anything but being the immoral, overpaid piece of scum that he is.

This is the man that ‘flipped the bird’ to his fans. This is the man who under the sobriquet ‘Ron Mexico’ was tested and treated for a STD (Herpes Simplex 2). The is the man who infected someone with Herpes Simplex 2 knowing that he was himself infected. This is the man who carries a water bottle with a ’secret compartment’ allegedly containing “a small amount of dark particulate and a pungent aroma closely associated with Marijuana.” This is the man who failed to show for a scheduled appearance on Capital Hill to lobby for more after-school funding.

An now here we have Michael Vick, indicted for conspiracy to travel in interstate commerce in aid of unlawful activities and to sponsor a dog in an animal fighting venture in a 19 page indictment listing extremely detailed facts, figures and dates, corroborated by numerous people.

SCLC President Charles Steele announced Thursday during a news conference that the group will find a way to honor Vick during its national convention that began Friday.

“We will recognize Vick for being an outstanding human being,” said Steele. “We will work with anyone who opens their heart and arms to us.”

The president of the SCLC told Channel 2’s JaQuitta Williams the organization will honor Vick by praying for him. Steele said supporting people in need is what the SCLC has been about for the past 50 years.

“We’re in support of Michael as a human being,” SCLC president Charles Steele said. “Right now, he’s feeling discarded, ostracized by people who are rushing to judgment. It’s our responsibility to save him.”

Steele said he did not know if Vick will attend any of the events at the conference.

Former President Bill Clinton is a scheduled speaker and will cut the ribbon of the SCLC’s new headquarters. Presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton (D-N.Y.) , Sen. Barack Obama (D-Ill.) , Mitt Romney and Mike Huckabee are also expected to attend. (WSBTV)

Needless to say is not going over very well or is it thought of as a popular or intelligent thing for the SCLC to be doing right now!

National and local reaction towards Vick has been mixed, particularly in the black community. Media mogul Russell Simmons and activist and former presidential candidate Al Sharpton both condemned Vick and called for his corporate sponsors to break ties with him. But last week, here in Atlanta, R.L. White, president of the Atlanta branch of the NAACP, held a press conference and rally urging the public and the media not to rush to judgment against Vick. (Atlanta Journal Constitution)

The Atlanta Journal Constitution has a poll next to the story asking the following question – “What do you think about the SCLC’s plan to honor Falcons player Michael Vick, who has been indicted on dogfighting charges?”, the available answers are; “They’re out of their mind”, “It’s time someone stuck up for Vick; he’s been attacked too much” and “I don’t care”. At last check, “They’re out of their mind” is in the least with an overwhelming 78% of the votes!

I can only agree very strongly!
