UPDATE – Vet Speaks Out & More on “Red”
This is so pathetic that it is almost beyond comprehension! This severely neglected cocker spaniel was left in front of the Anderson Inner City Animal Hospital in Buffalo, NY which is sad enough in itself but what makes this even worse is that when the animal hospital got a call that the dog was there, all they did was take some water out and call the Buffalo County Animal Shelter. They didn’t try to help the dog at all!! This is an animal hospital for God’s sake!!
To make matters worse, 24-hours later the poor dog was still sitting there. Buffalo County animal control says they went out but the dog ran away. The SPCA picked the dog up when it was called and took it to be care for. When they managed to shave the mats off the dog, the dog, which should have weighed 30-lbs, weighed only 9-lbs.
“We can’t tell right now if his kidneys are shut down…” said Veterinarian Karen Moran.
“There is something seriously wrong with this dog. Anyone that works in a veterinary hospital, I don’t care if it is a clerk to the hospital or up to the veterinarian, could determine that this dog was suffering,” said Carr.
Oddly enough when someone went to the Animal Hospital there was a sign on the door that it was the doctor’s day off. Hmmmm, surprising! Wonder if that was the normal schedule?
I am just appalled that an animal hospital, some place that is supposed to care for and treat animals would leave that poor dog to suffer on the sidewalk outside for 24-hours! I hope this story gets out far and wide and they lose every customer they have!! Why couldn’t they take that poor baby in and devote just a little time to care? Would that have really been too much to ask? Guess that doc didn’t get into his biz for the love of animals! Bastard!

The dog, who has been dubbed “Red” by the staff at the SPCA is hanging in there for now. Below is some info from the SPCA website on him:
Upon arrival the emaciated and dehydrated dog, dubbed “Red” and estimated to be just three years old, was administered intravenous fluids and vitamins. Weighing in at only seven pounds (a cocker spaniel’s normal weight is 28 – 30 pounds), Red received a full examination and his thick mats were shaved. According to SPCA veterinarian Dr. Karen Moran, Red is suffering from kidney malfunction and may have other internal damage. Although he is showing signs of improvement, his condition is guarded.
“We are doing everything we can to save this dog’s life,” says Debby Williams, SPCA veterinary services manager. “Unfortunately, in such severe starvation cases, there could be so much going on internally of which we are unaware, and his life is still in tremendous danger. We keep reminding ourselves of this fact, but taking it one day at a time in these cases is so difficult…everyone here has already fallen in love with Red and has become so attached to him. He’ll be receiving plenty of TLC with practically round-the-clock care.”
“What we have here is a serious breach of ethics, as far as I’m concerned,” said Barbara Carr, SPCA executive director. “A dog was in need of life-saving attention, was steps away from the entrance to a veterinary clinic, and was ignored and neglected. I can’t say why the choice to ignore the dog was made, but I can say that the SPCA cannot allow an animal to be treated this way without voicing a public opinion, without making formal complaints, and without opening an investigation into the matter. I suspect the animal-lovers of our community are as outraged as we are.” Carr adds, “Animals with contagious illnesses are treated on a daily basis at veterinary clinics filled with other animals receiving treatment. That’s what veterinary clinics are for. They are equipped to isolate and deal with animals that may be contagious to other animals.”
An SPCA investigation into this case was opened this morning. A formal complaint against the Anderson Inner City Animal Hospital was made to New York State by the SPCA yesterday.

This should be publicized world wide and the animal hospital should be shut down. How could anyone love animals and let this happen. All shelters, hospitals, vets and so on should have to take an oath to protect and help animals and if not met, they should lose their right practice. Whoever left this dog should be punished too. Why wouldn’t you go somewhere for help. If you couldn’t afford it, there are places to help. Get off your lazy butts and look, it’s there. This just grinds my butt, you don’t even know. I hope this poor baby gets a chance to live. Please keep us posted.
I agree Moe! Perhaps the person who left it finally had a heart or found the dog or whatever and thought that an animal hospital would care… so much for that!
I so hope this baby lives!
D
I am appalled that an animal clinic cares so little that they would let this poor baby die right there on their doorstep…I am so glad Im not an animal in need of life saving left on the steps of that clinic. I sure hope that clinic gets their license revoked!!! That is just so wrong!! I pray that this precious dog lives…karma will get the clinic!
Hey how about the bitch who left nine kittens in a sealed plastic bag to die in front of the ASPCA they tried to save them but it was too late. Anyone who abuses animals should be executed as far as
I am concerned this will get worse with the economy. many artist and others are speaking out. Reproduction human and animal should be enforced. This does not mean murder but reproductive control. I would never ever!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hurt an animal. They are part of our world. I love them, so please help them.
These people should be examined for a heart/
This is horrible , if this poor pup would have been left with any of us he would have received treatment immediately , it shows you what motivates this facility
Only the almighty dollar, Terry… ticked me off so bad this morning! Damn then to hell!
D.
I’ve already sent this to my beloved relatives in Buffalo; they’ll send it on out to those there who they know. They are in the ‘pubilc eye,’ so MANY in the Buffalo area will KNOW about this SOON!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What MAJOR POS those people ARE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!: HISS & SPIT and MISERY upon threm!!!
Thank you Scarlet!! I really hope the word gets out. There is no excuse!!
D.
What scum bags this animal hospital is all they want is money and not help animals…. people like this should be run out town… I’d help an animal before I help humans anymore these days….. I spit upon these lazy asses up there in Bufflo …
Get the word out. Send this to other blogger websites, discussion forums…the like.
They do not have a website, but, you CAN leave a Google review on them. Google them and leave your thoughts on the Google review page. I did.
That is disgusting. I hope this poor baby gets some affection and care, even if it is for a short time – he deserves at least a little comfort and happiness in his poor sad life.
I have spent the day going to this story, then minimizing it. I do not understand. This is a medical facility for animals. NO ONE could come out and see to this little one? Are they all just concerned about getting a paycheck, with no feelings what so ever toward any animal? I am going to find the information on the State Vets board, and send them a letter they will never forget.
That poor baby. How any human could let them get in the condition that baby was in, the matted hair (how can you not take the time to brush your babies?), the neglect in general. I assume that whoever dropped the dog off in the front of the building had good intentions as to hoping the dog would be attended to, but alas, the vet apparently was unavailable. What a cold hearted bastard.
I am hoping and praying that that little one does not have kidney failure, and that while being nursed back to health, he will find that not all humans are unaware of his needs. He is probably the sweetest little dog, and all he needs is the love, affection, caring and devotion from humans. Here is to hoping he will get well quickly and be adopted out to someone or a family who feels as we do towards animals here on this site.
Actually he wasn’t unavailable, he saw the dog and decided it was just matted and not actually hurt so he didn’t bother with it. The SPCA is trying to get the ethics committee to take a look at this “vet” because of this. Must be a helluva vet… nah, just a heartless bastard!
D.
Since he DID SEE this poor canine, I’ve determined this vet IS a POS, incompetent and a PERP himself. He needs to be charged, prosecuted and sentenced for HIS animal cruetly/neglect–just as ANY PERP would be!!!!!
Sorry, I misread it – but in essence, he was unavailable. What the hell, the sob could not even take the baby in to “give him the once over”?
Don’t vets have to take an oath, just as a human doctor does? Dumb coldhearted bastard.
I hope they take away his license.
“I hope they take away his license.”
Me too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cant even write Im in shock and cant stop crying. justice has to be made.
As is common in the medical field most Vets are in it for the money. Here in my town the local vet was very well off shall we say but didn’t feel th4e humane part to offer any treatment for animals that needed help very badly. He would not see any one’s pets if they couldn’t afford to pay FULL price. No payment plan, nothing. I even gave some money so that some one’s dog could get some treatment. He sold his practice and is a RICH man now.
He’s another POS vet, scum-ass vet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Y’know, I don’t have a problem with a professional person wanting to make money, we need it to live on but I’ll be damned if anyone should go into any medical profession, human or animal, who doesn’t have some compassion and caring. I would never want a vet to even look at one of my babies if I didn’t know they had a sincere love for animals and not just their bottom line.
There is no forgiveness in my heart for this vet, no matter his excuse and he has none at all!
D
What a poor excuse for a vet…that’s all I can say. No morals at all…
I can’t even think about the POS that let this poor baby get into this condition as I am so incensed with the heartless BASTARD vet that totally ignored it’s obvious suffering. He needs looking into..He has no love for animals only a love for money. If that was a doctor that left a suffering human patient outside his surgery for 24 hours he would be struck off !!!!!
Sam, he is a DOCTOR! As I said before, what about his code of Ethics? He is a lousy example of a vet, but moreso a horrible example of a human being.
The fact that the dog was just left there, with no owner to claim him or bitch the doctor out, by the vet doing what he did shows he has no feelings or heart. If it was one of us who had seen the dog there, hell I would have brought him INTO the vet’s office, and paid the bill myself. I am sure anyone here would have done the same.
My God, look at that poor baby! And this asshole doctor (I use that term very losely) said he was just matted??? I hope he loses his license and is charged with animal cruelty!! What a POS bastard! He will get his in the end but in the meantime I pray he doesn’t cause another innocent soul to suffer like that little angel. Please God, help that baby to survive and find a loving home. He so deserves it! Everytime I look at that picture I start crying all over again! Just makes me sick to think a Vet would or could turn his back on him.
I hope you’re talking about the “doctor” part when you say using the term loosely because the other part isn’t even in question!
D
Ok, I’ve added an update to the story above. It includes a video with an interview with the vet as well as an update on the poor dog.
D.
That is the best news that I have had all day. For a cocker to have that low of a weight, makes me sick. I was so happy to see his beautiful little face! I am praying that with all the love and attention and proper medical care, Red will see that life is worth living. Lots of puppy prayers for little Red.
I must commend what Ms. Carr had said about the vet who did not care for this little one, and it is all basically what we all have been saying here all day. I am so happy they will be opening an investigation into the reasoning behind the other vets neglect of this baby.
OK – someone thought enuf to drop this poor baby off in front of an ANIMAL Hospital (how it ended up in such bad shape is beyond me) but still……a hospital.
This place shold be shut down – no questions asked.
I will spread the word to everyone I know – I hope to god this little angel survives and gets the loving home he deserves.
It looks like his life is just beginning , good luck pup .I am sure he will get a great home if he can recover. I have a good feeling .My Vet is great , he knows I am not wealthy but have 5 dogs between my mother and I and he gives me some breaks and also does stray cats for a very little price. If this was my Vet , I would cancel all future dealings and make it known why
This is horrible. They should take away this slimeball’s license, and shut down this “deathspital” and I hope and pray this litle angel lives and get a home where they will love and care for this baby.I am so terribly sad and angry at the same time!! How can this happen? Unspeakable.
I am horrified and in shock.I pray this poor baby survives this and finds a loving home.I am so disgusted by the animal hospital and believe their name should be spread far and wide.Expose them as the scumbags they are.My God to not treat an obviously suffering animal is inhumane and cruel~heartless monsters!Shame on them!!
I worked for a veterinarian for 5 years who was interested only in clients who had money. One time I was on my way back to the vet office (I lived upstairs) and I hit a little mini-poodle with my car – he was actually between the tires of the car in front of me so I didn’t see him til last minute – I hit him and then a car coming the opposite way hit him too. I wrapped him in my coat and brought him to the vet office where I worked as office manager, and called the vet to come in – he actually yelled at me on the phone and told me I should have let him die because now we have to find the owner or we won’t get paid. He came in and slammed things around and wouldn’t do much for the dog except stabilize him (he seemed to be paralyzed). I was crying but he didn’t care – he was just pissed. Turned out the owner was in California and didn’t want the dog (the caretaker didn’t either). So we had to euthanize him. It was awful. At least I tried to comfort the poor thing but the vet probably scared him with his rage.
(
Debbie, I cannot imagine the pain you went thru personally with your experience, but you did do the right thing. I cannot believe the vet you worked for had such a pissy attitude – where are his ethics? How could any vet act like that, and act in such a childish manner, throwing things around as he did. What a selfish person – again looking at that almighty dollar.
I am sorry for your sad experience. Wish it would have turned out differently. This really makes me take a harder look at my own vet for my 3 boys.
GOOD LORD. I would of given him a harsh *tongue lashing* BEFORE handing over my resignation.
“Doctor” Hector Anderson in Buffalo, NY IS A PIECE OF S***!!!!!!
Hear ye; hear ye ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:
Mr. Hector Anderson, who is a veterinarian in Buffalo, NY, IS A PIECE OD S***!!
For sure the “vet” was a piece of sh.., however even if he was not there is the rest of the staff just as heartless?
“Dr.” Henderson as well as all of his staff are uncompassionate pieces of $hit! He is also a liar. He thought the dog was just matted? Give me a break. I am so pissed right now I can’t think.
It is a shame some vets do not adhere to the Hippocratic oath “do no harm…”
I have worked for vets before that have euthanized healthy dogs (and dogs with ongoing–but managable problems) for clients without even calling a rescue–breed specific rescues would have jumped on a few of them–but the vet said it was too much liability or something.
I also worked for a vet that turned away a kid with a dying pet cat her parents refused to pay to have euthanized. “Not my problem…take it to animal control” It was a kid! I got fed up and paid for it myself. What a way to teach kids that letting an animal suffer is unnacceptable!
But there are so many great vets out there who do more than their share for rescue, though.
What soul less piece of crap this man is. He clearly has no moral fiber.
May the Anderson Inner City Hospital rot! How could they do that??? There is possitively NO excuse to leave this precious baby outside their very door and ignore his suffering. I hope not a single soul EVER uses this hospital again. “Brought him out some water”….poor baby probably couldn’t even get up to drink it. This is no vet that is in the job for the love of the animals. Just in it for the money and NOTHING else. Man am I pissed! I was just wishing an ol’ friend was still with us (God rest her soul). She loved Cocker’s and would have taken him in a heartbeat! I had a vet many years ago, far away, that NEVER charged me for services. A truly wonderful man, that truly loved animals. He sould vet check a mare for pregnancy and hang out a while to be sure everything was alright after his checkup. He was the BEST! He would always be there likity split if you needed him. He truly cared. I miss him. Wish he was up here so i sould still have my favorite vet with me. My most trusted vet. I wish Red all the best and pray her makes it. God Bless all of you that put the effort in to help this little sweet pea.
He was PTS. Here is the article – HERE
As much as the animal hospital needs to be disciplined, the owners need to be found and charged for this. I hope someone recognizes the dog and comes forth.
They all carry the guilt Andrea and they all need to be held accountable for the poop baby’s misery and death!
D.
How sad. The article says that he had a rhinestone collar on. Poor little guy was probably a missing dog and some family has been grieving his loss. I’d bet someone found him living on the streets and thought they were being a good samaritan by dropping him off at a vet hospital, assuming he’d be cared for but not willing or able to pay the vet bill themselves.
One of my dogs suffered acute kidney failure a few years ago. With a quick response by our amazing vet, he fully recovered. I wonder if the delay in treatment because of this SOB played a role in this little guy not making it.
He should lose his license – I hope the community puts his clinic out of business by refusing to take their animals there any longer.
You hear shocking stories every day of abuse, but what makes this one so horrific is that is was “at the hands of” a hospital, a doctor(s), and every single person that walked by this little guy. They may not have started the abuse, but they certainly intensified it! I don’t know what kind of oath a vet takes, but I can guarantee you this little worm of a so-called vet ignored it’s very soul. This is a horrific betrayal to the dog, to all animals, to the clients, and to every human being with a heart. I still believe in the “eye for an eye approach”, and there would be so much more of the “treat others as you would have them treat you”.
So very true Gig! People who don’t care should never get into any kind of profession that takes love, care and compassion. Beyond sad!
D.
I just read that this little boy was put down a few hours ago…
My heart is broken.
I just saw the video with the PERP vet: Mr. Hector Anderson, which is also above (for us). OMG(!!!), whatta STUPID, IGNORANT, SOUL-LESS, air-wasting POS he IS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I want him ruined, pennyless, in jail for ANIMAL NEGLECT and MORE!!!!! I want his “employees” to suffer MAJOR GUILT for their compliance with their slime-ass boss and NOT doing “what is RIGHT” in the eyes of us all. I wish MISERY for them ALL, each and EVERY ONE!!!!!!!!!
Scarlet, I wish and hope the news you just posted is untrue. But I have this sinking feeling that is is true.
I hope that in some way shape or form, the vet and the hospital get fined, and the vet who neglected this little ball of fur get fined, and he has his license revolked. There is no excuse, being a vet especially, or any of his employees not to give immediate care to poor little Red. It’s Mothers Day, and now my kids will see me crying, over little Red, and the inhumane treatment this little one got for a so called life.
RIP little Red. Your hurt, pain and sorrow are over, and you are in a better place in the hands of God. I am sure we will see you at the Bridge. Rest little one. Your short life did make a difference to many of us.
I am happy that little Red felt love before passing. I don’t have anything else nice to say.
Sickening news – Lets urge everyone here to write to this Vet’s address, the city, etc. The truth is that there is little help for dogs or animals for whom their guardians cannot afford medical treatment, much less “grooming”. Just try to find someone, even most of the rescue groups say they are sorry, but…………. Unless one case is publicized, then they come and try to help – “a day late, and a dollar short” – This vet. clinic is a shameful example of how the veternarians in USA operate. Powerful $$$ bill.
Even our writng won’t help erase the misery this little precious soul experienced in his life on earth – hell on earth, it appears…much like the 3rd world countries. Shame on us, shame on our animal care system! Thanks for your heartfelt comments above….May there be a Rainbow Bridge for these most vulnerable among us, who lanquish in the shadows of bounty and comfort, shut out from the least of human compassion.
I’m with you Scarlet… so hurt for the baby and angry at those heartless cretins!! Damn them all to hell!
S.
I would like to see this place SHUT DOWN but ALSO~every employee that saw that poor baby laying out there and left him needs to be unemployed and DENIED unemployment benefits and hopefully they will all starve to death, and their kidney’s shut down on them all…..how can this happen in front of a so called animal hospital…this story makes me SICK! I would like to see this vet lose everything he has, his home, his car, his bank acct, I would like to see him starving on the street!
Shelly,
I am behind you 100% – there should be no mercy. I was leary of watching the video but I had too – the poor baby looks horrible but much better than he did. And OMG – his prognosis. And the yah-hoo is still claiming “only matted”
Maybe when this guy gets old and sick and ends up in an ER somewhere – they;ll let him sit there for hours claiming it’s only the sniffles. May he rot in hell.
There is no excuse for this towards ANY animal. I don’t care if it were a sick rodent or wildlife – it has the RIGHT to at least be checked out.
I never wanted to folow this story – it just gets me so angered but I am praying for this poor baby and check back to see how he’s doing.
I hope next check he’ll be on the mend with a NEW home waiting for him.
Unfortunately, the poor little fellow was put down yesterday. The SPCA tried everything to save him, but he was too weak to withstand surgery, and he had too much internal damage. The vet in question should definitely lose his license. I saw him on TV and was appalled beyond belief at his demeanor and his defensive attitude. He claimed he did not have to treat the dog because “he was not injured.” HUH??????? Does a dog have to be injured before he is treated, as opposed to being starved to death? I believe this vet is evil.
At least, at the SPCA, they were cuddling Kenny the dog and kissing him and giving him love during his last days. I live in Buffalo and there were hundreds of calls to the Erie County SPCA from people who were outraged by Kenny’s situation and from people who offered to adopt Kenny. That evil vet is certainly not representative of the many caring vets in our area. I know my own vet would NEVER have ignored Kenny.
Kate,
OMG how horrible – thanks for the update but it still maddens me. At least the little guy is in a happier place and free from hate and pain.
But how many does it take to realize the happy places with no hate & pain are usually our very own living rooms or beds?????
This vet is not a vet – and I am still not done following this – altho I am saddened beyond belief about this loss – even in his worse state – he was adorable – a face you just want ed to hug and kiss all over.
I will not stop til this ya-hoo looses his license and hopefully more….there is NO EXCUSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Kathy
Kathy,
I am so appreciative of your (and everyone on this forum)’s concern for poor little Kenny. The SPCA has posted an update about Kenny on their website at http://www.yourspca.org. There is also some good news on their website—–an arrest was made in the starvation death of another poor dog who was found dead just a few days after the Kenny story broke. These people who abuse animals (and I use the term “people” loosely) will be repaid in kind someday, somehow.
Kate
I hope that’s the one where the poor dog was found dead in the crate…. so sad! I never will understand how people can do such cruel things even though I see them every day!
D.
This Vet office and Dr. has no credible excuse for not helping this suffering animal. This brought tears. Shame on them they should be held accountable for ignoring this poor baby.
If they do not care about animals what are they doing in the business, MONEY. I lost my English Cocker 8 years ago, and my heart was so broke I couldn’t get another dog. I saw this dog, and immediately wanted him, and I guess he was put down. Why????Why??? There is too much cruelty done to animals, I can hardly deal with it.
I urge everyone who cares here to NOT let this vet forget his crime and failure to even extend an ounce of compassion, except for his little bowl of water. The address is easy to find, along with county/city official’s addresses and phone numbers. Lets not let this poor little soul’s misery and death go unnoticed – or forgotten. To think of his lifetime, obviously, of misery and despair – then to be betrayed by a POS posing as a helper to animals. Disgusting – beyond words.
ouch this really breaks my heart! I’m literally crying while typing in this comment. It breaks my heart to see too much cruelty to a helpless animal/s. I’m a totally dog lover and I cant even look at the picture….
They couldn’thelp this poor little thing because it didn’t have a big roll of money with it. I can not believe that people that are supposed to be helping animals put that almighty buck ahead of all things. This atrocity proves my point. And I don’t care where it is at. If I would have been there that little thing would not have sat for 24 hours, not even a minute. I’m as poor as it gets but that little thing would have gotten help. And as far as that animal hospital gos, It surely is lacking any kind of compassion.
Channel your anger into putting the POS out of business. Demonstrate in front of his hospital, file complaints everywhere, especially the City Inspectors and licensing department. Hand out flyers to anyone who goes in or out. Hold vigils for the dog. Make it too uncomfortable for him to do business in your community. Inform other good vets of his actions and ask for their help. Sharp nails in his parking lot is a good guerilla tactic. We need to create our own justice since the system will not. Just hassle him any way you can. But I fear most of your anger will pass and this will be forgotten. I pray to God everyday to put an end to such cruel people. What are they here for? Strike them down and let them suffer as these animals have only one hundred times worse.
But now I must take care of the rescues I have who need food love and training so they can find a loving home and put the past behind them.
Strongirl, I do not think our anger towards people such as this vet and all his employees will ever pass. Most of us here on D’s site are very passionate about animals in general, and will go above and beyond to help any of our furry family members, even if they are not of our immediate family. These fur babies are all related in one way or another, and are all creatures of God. And He put us on this earth to care for them, not neglect and hurt them.
I have sent an email voicing my disgust to the New York Office of Professional Discipline at conduct@mail.nysed.gov. I hope they are deluged by calls and emails from people about this incident
http://www.op.nysed.gov/opd.htm
Poor excuse for a vet. What type of oath did he take? I would not trust him with the care of my pets!
People in this vet’s community need to express outrage at this money-hungry, animal hating veterinarian! Yes not all vets actually like animals. Never, ever go to a vet who doesn’t own an animal him/herself. Boycott his clinic, picket his clinic, inform his current clients about this story. Him and his staff need to be unemployed and go begging themselves for assistance.
Post pictures of the vet and all his staff, the public needs to recognize who all the callous people are.
My rescued cat is currently laying on my lap as I type this. She was found about 4 years ago freezing and starving on a concrete wheelchair ramp meowing for help.
When I arrived for my physical therapy I asked about the skinny cat with lots of hair missing who was obviously very cold from the low temperature and heavy falling snow. Well the folks inside said she was there yesterday. They all thought they had done their kind act by placing a small bowl of water and dry cat food, along with a towel.
Well the towel quickly became soaked from the snow and as it got colder the emaciated 4.5 pound adult cat meowed louder. The whole staff and all the clients coming and going were all apathetic, and continued to ignore her loud meows for help. So I went to my car, got a large box, placed a blanket inside, ripped a mouse hole in it and she immediately went inside for some warmth. I then went to my 30 minute session late and so very mad!
When I went back outside I picked up the box, placed it in my passenger seat, and drove home, still steaming. Turns out my dear feline was between 3-6 years old, had frostbite on her face, paws and ears (the left tip fell off two days later). Her patchy, baldness all over her body was due to untreated allergies and apart from being very underweight, she suffers from no internal organ issues.
I do know the staff inside would have let her freeze to death and then would have thrown out her tiny, frozen body out with the trash! Today she is a gorgeous chocolate, dark-brown Havanna Brown (a rare breed) with piercing green eyes who loves all people and hanging out with the elderly she regularly visits at two nursing homes. When not in an elderly person’s lap, she is often found hanging out on my neck going every where I go.
When we recently attended a dog expo, yes she likes dogs, I had to wait while passerbys took photos of her. Then a professional photographer begged me to let her have a free sitting, as long as I wore green, to bring out my Sweetie Pie’s (yes that’s her name) luscious green eyes.
Thank goodness YOU came along. I, like most animal advocates/activists shouldn’t be surprised- after seeing so much – at the therapy staff’s “mild” concern, but it is always stunning, devastating to see human beings ignore an animal in such dire straits, suffering in the freezing cold. Unforgivable! You were that kitty’s angel that day. If only we had a zillion like you in the world.
Veronica, thank you for sharing this story with a wonderfully happy ending, thanks to you. Every day I lose more and more faith in people in general. Stories like this don’t restore my faith in people but it does make me love my animal lover friends even more!!
Hugs,
D.
Veronica, bless you , you beautiful wonderful lady.I am so glad that you were there for that little girl. How could those people be so dense? That was like leaving a baby out side in that . OMG, unreal. Thanking you again with my whole heart.Give Sweetie Pie a pat on the head and a hug for me, will you, Thanks : )
Oh Veronica, Thank God for you…..You made my heart glad. What a heartbreaking story with such a beautiful ending..Like D, my faith will never be restored in people, but you shine a light in the darkness. God bless you both….
I have yet to meet a vet whose first priority isn’t money. With all of my rescues (6) and all of my fosters, I’ve been to the vet plenty of times. I have been told my dogs needed totally unnecessary medical procedures to the tune of $700, to add to an already $1500 bill. It’s truly sad, but this doesn’t shock me. It’s unfortunate, it’s abhorrent, but it’s not uncommon. I hope that poor baby makes it and gets the life he deserves, and I hope the people in that community make it known that this was unacceptable and refuse to put anymore money in this man’s pocket.
Hello Deanna, in order to keep my blood pressure from rising too high, I just have this to say, are humans being born without sensitivity chips?! I don’t get it! I just don’t get it..It beyond me that someone wouldn’t come out and just scoop that dear heart up in their arms and hold her and love and tell her shes important. That she matters….I don’t get it…
Judith, I just don’t have a clue. I think people in general are much less sensitive to pain and suffering, they have become desensitized to it and just don’t care. For too many people, their world revolves around them and that’s it. If it had been you or me so most of the people here, yes, we would have scooped this poor baby up and done whatever it took to try to make her well. I don’t get it either and honestly, don’t want to. Don’t ever want to be able to understand how anyone could be so heartless and cruel.
D.
D and Judith, it is so much easier for people not to care – it interrupts their daily lives, the “don’t get involved” line of thinking. But then, there are those of us who do give a damn, and no matter what, we will do what is best for the dogs, in any case.
I am as outraged as everyone else on this site. I formed my own rescue due to the callous and apathetic (daresay, cruel) behaviors of veterinarians and the local animal control agency in my area. I know every step in examining the health of most animals in the ‘pet’ world. I can tell you for absolute certain that NO vet, regardless of their schooling or experience can merely look at any dog with such severely matted fur and determine that there is no injury as this POS vet stated publicly on the local news. The dog could have had massive blunt force trauma that would have been hidden by all the mats in his fur. This vet never so much as laid one finger on the poor furbaby’s body to check for anything. Any vet should know that an animal that severely matted would have numerous health issues as the severe mats indicate (DUH!) neglect. That horrible man deserves every horrible life circumstance that I can think of. But also deserving is the horribly cruel person that caused the poor pups condition. That must have been long term neglect.
I hope that sweet Kenny’s story inspires people to go out there and do good things. Pissed off by the video? then go volunteer for a shelter or rescue. Do some good to compensate for all the a$$holes out there that think nothing of animal welfare.
I was inspired enough by the acts of neglect and cruelty that I had seen first hand to rescue, rehabilitate and place into furever homes 400+ cats, dogs and pocket pets as well as rehab and release many wild critters. If only one in a hundred other people did the same, can you imagine what a wonderful world that would create for furbabies?
This is the update on little Red ~ RIP baby : (

SPCA MOURNS LOSS OF STARVED COCKER SPANIEL
Monday, May 11, 2009
By: Gina Browning, SPCA Director of Public Relations, 716-629-3505
Abandoned Dog Showed No Response to Fluids, Treatments, Blood Transfusion
It grieves the SPCA Serving Erie County to report that Red, also known by some in the community as Kenny, the seven-pound cocker spaniel abandoned and ignored outside of a Buffalo inner-city animal clinic last week, was euthanized for humane reasons late Saturday afternoon (read the original story at http://www.yourspca.org/site/News2?page=NewsArticle&id=6563&news_iv_ctrl=0.) .
“Red seemed to respond to fluids, vitamins, and treatments on Wednesday [May 6], when he was admitted to the shelter’s infirmary,” says Debby Williams, SPCA veterinary services manager. “However, despite several attempts, our veterinarians were unable to stop his vomiting, and due to severe malnourishment and dehydration, he suffered extreme internal damage. Red’s condition was worsened by an enlarged esophagus, probably congenital but only reparable through surgery…and Red would not have survived surgery. Our shelter veterinarians tried everything possible to save him, including a blood transfusion, but Red’s suffering only increased.”
As shelter staff members and volunteers mourn the loss of this little dog, SPCA Executive Director Barbara Carr is careful to point out the important role of the community in this case.
“The fact that Red was receiving care and love in his final days is the result of an entire community coming together to try to save him,” says Carr. “Members of the media were concerned enough about Red to contact us initially when they found him, and found his devastating circumstances so important that they took it upon themselves to tell his story. Countless community members, touched by this special pup they never met, took it upon themselves to donate what they could towards his care…towards our extreme attempts to save his life. Everyone became attached to Red very quickly. There is no doubt in my mind that, while he was here, Red knew he was being loved and cared for.”
The SPCA plans to follow up on complaints made to the Office of Professional Discipline at the New York State Department of Education against the Anderson Inner-City Animal Hospital, 1963 Fillmore Avenue in Buffalo. Red was alive outside the clinic at least 24 hours prior to the SPCA being contacted. Although Dr. Hector Anderson publicly admitted to being aware of Red’s presence and condition, he elected to ignore the suffering dog.

D is there an update on this POS so called vet?
Brenda, haven’t seen anything but will see if I can find anything. I’d like to know as well.
D.
This is horrible and inexcusable! It’s disgusting enough that the POS owner neglected this poor baby so badly to begin with, but you’d think that once the dog hit the sidewalk in front of an ANIMAL HOSPITAL, that his help and recovery would be on the way ASAP! I agree…I think this dr. should be held accountable for ignoring a plea for help. Unfortunately, there are alot of POS owners out there, we all know that, but you just do not expect this type of uncaring, “not my problem’ attitude from a vet AND veterinary hospital. Unbelievable! Shame on them! I hope this poor, sweet baby recovers fully and quickly and finds a wonderful, loving, forever home!
I just read the update and am extremely heartbroken by this news. I did not even know this poor, sweet dog yet I cannot stop crying. How can people like us on this website be so involved and caring, yet people working in that field, being RIGHT there, SEEING this suffering dog, not care or feel compelled to help? I am still so shocked and disgusted by ALL who worked there and were involved in helping this poor dog die. Because by NOT helping him, that’s exactly what they did. I am very glad there will be an investigation into this case. I think someone needs to be held accountable–2 parties need to be. I am so sorry, Red, you deserved so much better. I am glad you at least had love and care and compassion the last few days of your life. I so wish that time could have been at least 10 years longer. RIP, baby boy. <3
