Believe it or not, this actually happened to me many years ago with my 90 pound german shepherd. I had left her in the car (a 1965 dodge dart) parked in the shaded area of a large mall parking lot. The spot was located at the high end of the lot where the trees were. I found her where she apparently managed to curl up -on the floor in the drivers side behind the steering wheel all cozy and cool. In the process of getting there she knocked the parking brake out and the center mounted gear shift out of PARK. I too panicked when I returned to find my car not where I left it - thinking that both my car and precious dog had been stolen. However, I looked around hoping beyond hope that I was mistaken and the car must be there somewhere - I realized that the car was behind me. It was 'parked' in the aisle behind me. Closer examination revealed that the car was not so well parked but actually crashed into the car in front of it. A rather nasty note was on the windshield which said that my information as well as my 'reckless driving' had been recorded and I had better report to the store where the owner worked to exchange information! As I recall, I doubt that they actually believed my story but as long as my dog was okay that was all that mattered. I too refer to the incident as the day my Serena drove my car. I never again brought her shopping with me to any mall ever. I now realize our dogs are so much safer left at home...unless it is a drive 'to the park' to play.
