Voluntary Recall – Nutro Dog Food

Nutrodry-PCRO

Nutro has issued a voluntary recall of a couple of their dog food products.  This information cannot be found on their website – http://www.nutroproducts.com/ – but can be confirmed by calling the company at 1-800-833-5330.

The following products have been Voluntarily Recalled due to “Possible melted plastic in the bag.”

The products are sold only at Petsmart and/or Petco

  • Nutro - puppy-4.5lb-dry-kibble-bagNutro Natural Choice Chicken, Rice & Oatmeal Puppy 5# bags  – sold at Petsmart and Petco only
  • Nutro Ultra Puppy 4.5# bag – sold at Petsmart and Petco only
  • Nutro Ultra Puppy 30# bag – sold at Petco only

Specific Best by date 09/10/10

Please share this information with anyone you know that uses this product.

In the past (2008) I have written about Nutro being a problem dog food for numerous consumers, making dogs ill and even deaths which pet owners believe to be attributed to Nutro. Earlier this year the FDA did confirm an investigation into Nutro regarding the unesplianed illnesses and deaths surrounding their products.  As far as I know, no records have been released regarding the investigation.

Personally, I wouldn’t trust Nutro.  There have been complaints on top of complaints on top of complaints and from Nutro, only denials and random recalls of certain products.

Thanks for the heads up on this Pamm!

Yup that is why I changed to raw 15 years ago.
When will dog food companies get their act together.

This is soooo scary. I take care of a lot of rescues, esp. cats. I have my dog on a vegetarian dogfood that is made semi locally. I feed my cats nutro senior and kitten. Nutro had a recall of some of their catfoods earlier in the year. I cannot make the food from scratch. That would be too much work and too costly since I have so many to feed. I need a brand I can trust to be safe.. Are there any? I had them on the Science Diet lamb and rice, then they discontinued and raised prices, after they had there recalls. That is when I switched them to Nutro. These companies are looking for cheaper ways to make the food and raising the prices. It’s not fair. I just want a food I can trust won’t make my cats sick. :( This sucks! I am paying $40. per bag plus tax, and I don’t know if I am doing what is right for my cats!! Very messed up! The cheaper foods are even worse! Do you recommend a better type of catfood? I have been thinking of switching them back to science diet.

Sarah, best I can advise it to take a look at the far right column most of the way down the page, you’ll see a listing for “Dog Food Info,” under that listing is a link for natural and organic dog foods. This will take you to a site called GreenPeople.org. They have a lot of listings for dog foods. Now keep in mind that many of these listings are paid listings but they have website links and ratings, you can find out quite a bit about the different foods available out there.

I am leary about advocating any commercial dog food because I won’t use any of them myself. My best advice is to take some time and do some research. I wouldn’t ask a vet because many of them actually receive promos for pushing certain foods. This is a tough one.

Have you tried wellness? I had my cats on science diet befor all the recalls came out she was almost 20 yrs and developed renal failure, i had to have her put to sleep in 2006 i still miss her dearly. My other girl, i took off as she just did not seem eager to eat it anymore that is when i suspected a prob with the food and sure enough the recalls came out.

Thank God I don’t use either of these. I use Purina Pro Plan. The vet recommended it. And there are NO by-products in there either. I am also going to look into a product called Blue.

I was useing Nutro and my dogs were throwing up and just overall didnt seem like themselves, i posted back many months ago about Nutro food on facebook and myspace. Nutro was not to quick to recall their food even after numerous complaints including mine! I would not trust any of their food. I would tell people in petsmart some would listen some said oh well i have been feeding Nutro for a long time my dog is fine pfft! Unbelievable the ignorance of some people. I have been feedin my dogs Granny’s pot pie made by Merrick for over a year now its a few dollars more but worth it! It does not containe any wheat gluten or any of the crap most foods do. I make a chicken soup for them for a treat every now and again im very carefull w/ bones and go through the chicken meat with my hands to be sure no bones. For doggie treats they all line up for a cold carrot, they love em! and they are doing great! I have my cat on Wellness.

I give my dogs Nutro for sensitive stomach. Does anyone have recommendations for a good dog food for sensitive tummys?
    Thanks!

Thank God they don’t even sell this in my area. So sad that we have to investigate food for our babies. Makes me wonder if the food we eat has ingredients in it that are harmful to us.

Susie, excellent point and yet one more reason why I mostly only eat whole and fresh foods. All that processed and packaged stuff , that fast food, isn’t any good for you anyway.

I switched to Evanger’s dog food and I must say my 13 year old has so much more energy and has more life.
