Wicomico County Humane Society’s kennels have been put under quarantine due to a highly contagious virus which has infected dogs there.

Director Linda Lugo says it could be canine influenza, but confirmation will have to wait for the results of blood tests.

She says dogs with canine influenza may experience runny noses, coughing, and sneezing. But she says some dogs show no symptoms and then spread the disease.

Lugo estimates that all 50 dogs currently at the Humane Society have come in contact with the virus. She says the disease is easily spread when people visit the dogs, then move from one dog to another without washing their hands.

Lugo says humans and other animals can’t contract the virus. (WJZ TV 13)
