Will There Be Justice for Shepp Now? VIDEO & PETITION

Shepp, abandoned and starved

Update 6/29/09 – No Justice for Shepp, Cruelly Starved Dog! VIDEO

In Corpus Christi, TX, a horror story of neglect and abuse has been going on for some time to its sad, inevitable ending, the death of a once beautiful and innocent dog at the hands of monsters!

For more then a month, Shepp, a German Shepherd, was chained on a concrete driveway with at an abandoned home with no food, no water, with a collar embedded into his neck causing a serious wound. Day by day the dogs suffering and pain worsened with no one caring enough to do anything. Finally someone did dump some food and water for the Shepp but by then the dog was so sick and weak and in such pain, he couldn’t even get to it.

After Shepp was finally rescued, a neighbor told reporters that a man in a tan colored Ford Ranger pickup dropped the dog off about a month ago at a vacant home. She said that she knew the dog was indeed thin but didn’t know to what extend until this past Monday when it had apparently gotten loose from whatever means the individual had used to tie it up.

The pickup was found at another residence in Corpus Christi. The owner of the residence claimed to know who owned the pickup but couldn’t remember his name despite it being her brother-in-law. She said he found the dog.

I watched the videos, tears streaming down my face to witness such incredible visible pain and could not understand how anyone could do something so cruel and heartless.

Finally, on September 16, Animal Control made it to the scene and rescued the left for dead dog. You canShepp, finally rescued... too late see the compassion with which they treated him, but for Shepp, it was far too late. He died that very day.

Now his abusers have been arrested and charged, but will there really be justice for this dog who was unloved and unwanted until it was far too late. He suffered beyond belief, desperately trying to hold on a survive through sheer will but his sick and broken body was just too far beyond the effort.

The owners of Shepp were 44-year-old Daniel Luna and 45-year-old Norma Luna who owned the abandoned house where Shepp was left to die so cruelly.

Norma Luna“It was bad to see a dog in that condition, where it no longer could help itself and needed somebody to do something immediately for it,” Richard Gould, Animal Care Services supervisor, said.

Officials said the dog was extremely malnourished. He also had hook worms and was covered with flees.

Veterinarian Dr. Tom House said he was shocked by Shep’s condition and that it was the worst case he had ever seen.

“He’d had the collar embedded in his neck. The collar had been removed, but it was infected and there were maggots in there,” House said. “The area was an open wound, about three inches wide all the way around, the loose skin underneath was even more open than that.”Daniel Luna

“It’s tragic, it’s upsetting, it’s frustrating when you do care about an animal, to see an animal in that condition,” Gould added. (KRISTV)

The heartless pair bonded out on the same day they were arrested, guess they didn’t want to miss a meal or the comfort of their home. Sadly, the most they face is a year in jail if they’re convicted. That’s right, a year! This is only a misdemeanor and after all… ‘it was only a dog.’

This dog suffered! He lay on the concrete for so long that he had an open wound on his should that went down to the bone. This dog was tortured as surely as if someone brutally beat him. Actually a death like that would have been kinder than this long, slow, lingering death. What bastards!

If you have the heart for it, you can see more videos HERE. They are not easy to watch. You can see and feel the pain. It hurts!

You MONSTERS!!!!!!!!! God I think I might be sick. I just can't understand how you could treat an animal that way. Why did no one step in after seeing that dog like that for A MONTH at a VACANT home. I am furious…..when is this going to end?!?! I am going to go give my dogs a big hug and a treat. Rest in Peace sweet boy.

  • dru

this SO pisses me off….i hope these 2 rotten excuses for humans get put away…why, if u r NOT gonna take care of a pet…DO YOU GET ONE?!!!!!! i just cannot fathom this!!!!!!!!
i'm so very sorry, Shepp, for what u suffered. rest now, sweet boy…..

  • bernice

why is torture like that a misdemeanor? there are so many resources out there for people who don't want a dog anymore that treatment like this should be considered a felony.
maybe there should be safe drops for pets like there is for babies and young children.
why couldn't they have droped him in someones yard or at a firestation, even a voulenteer firestation where he would at least be found in time to get help.
better still, why didn't that lady that was so moved to tears, take the time and energy to walk around her own house and go check on him. the house was empty so she wouldn't have been accused of tresspassing if she did. she couldn't have picked up a phone and called ac a little sooner?
the whole thing makes me sick.
i live in an area where dogs are considered property not pets by most people. they find it strange that i spent $2500.00 to put up a fence for my critters to keep them safe. the rural mentality sometimes baffels me. we have anti cruelty laws here but most of the folks don't think it applies to them because they don't consider animals as anything more than property. if they don't get around to mowing their lawn or feeding their dog, it's all the same thing to them.

OMG THESE SCUMB BAGS NEED TO HAVE THE SAME THING DONE TO THEM AS I'D LOVE TO SIT BY & WATCH THEM WIGGLE & SQUARM TO GET UP WHEN THEY ARE TO WEAK. BUT WHATS MORE IMPORTANT IS WHY IN THE BLOODY HELL DIDN'T SOMEONE DO SOMETHING SOONER I MEAN THAT WOMEN DOES OWN A PHONE DON'T SHE? ALL ANYONE HAD TO DO WAS MAKE A BLOODY PHONE CALL. IF I WOULD HAVE BEEN THERE BELIEVE ME SHEP WOULD HAVE SURVIVED AS I WOULD HAVE GONE OVER THERE & RESCUED HIM & I WOULDN'T HAVE WORRIED 1 BIT ABOUT TRESSPASSING. I WOULDN'T HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT IT TWICE. EVERYONE WHO DIDN'T DO SOMETHING TO HELP SHEP IS JUST AS MUCH A CRIMINAL AS IS THE 2 WHO WERE ARRESTED IN MY BOOK.

  • roseanna

again we need to post these pictures on the web on a web of shame so no one affords them any courtesies…
they should be in jail for the rest of their lives…anyone this selfish will not be kind to their fellow citizens or neighbors or anyone….
who lets these people out on bail anyway???

  • JANET MITCHELL

@roseanna – I'D LIKE TO KNOW WHO LET THEM OUT ON BAIL ALSO. LETS PUT HIS @#* IN JAIL TOO.

  • julieannz

It is horrorable what they did to the dog. What I want to know is, if the lady saw the dog dropped off, why was it a month before she did anything. She couldn't see it was not being feed or watered? She couldn't see it getting weaker and hear it barking and whinning? If someone drops a dog off at an empty house next door to you doesn't it make you suspious? Wouldn't you check on the dog? I don"t understand how the dog got into such bad shape when the lady knew it had been left tied at a empty house. she said she noticed it getting thinner, but didn't do anything until the dog was almost dead!!!

  • julieannz

janet that is what i am trying to get across also. The nieghbor lady knew the dog was there, said she noticed it was getting thinner. Why didn't she walk over and check it on? Why didn't she call animal control just to be safe? I have a nieghbor who keeps 3 hounds in a pen out back of her house. Animal control has been out bunches of times, but there is nothing that can be done because they have a dog house and food and water. Yet, I walk behind her house at least once a week (in a public area, not in her yard) and check on the dogs to be sure they are not sick, or that they do not look uncared for. How could she leave that dog for a month and not walk over and check on it?

  • gail

They deserve the same treatment ,what a miserable pair, the world would be a better place without the likes of them.

  • Pearl Millard

Any one that can do this to a defencless creature doesn't deserve to still be living a life. They should be treated in the same way. R.I.P Shepp. God has you now and you will know what love is all about.

  • Kerry

This is one of those stories…one that will haunt and piss me off the rest of my life here on earth…Like Toby,Justice,Mercy,Ella,Daisy Duke,Regina.. and the list goes on…How are people capable of this??I can't watch the videos…the still image of Shepp's beautiful face laying on probably the first pillow in his life is all my heart can stand..So I may be missing some of the story…but if I saw someone drop a dog off at a vacant house, I would have stepped in before they got out of the driveway..I don't understand any of this…The trash who abandoned poor Shepp to die a hellish death and simply not care….or someone knowing what was happening and doing nothing…Just does not compute…Fly Free Shepp!!You are safe now….And I agree Deanna….Hellfire will not burn hot enough for people who torture innocent and helpless creatures to death..

  • JANET MITCHELL

I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW ANYONE CAN DO THIS. AND I WILL NEVER UNDERSTAND HOW SOMEONE COULD SEE A DOG IN THIS SHAPE & NOT PIC UP A PHONE & MAKE A PHONE CALL. THE ONLY THING I'M GREATFUL FOR IS THAT SHEP DIDN'T DIE ALL ALONE OUT THERE & HAD SOMEONE TO SEE HIM SAFLY TO THE RAINBOW BRIDGE R.I.P PEACE SHEP FOR NOW NO ONE WILL EVER BE ABLE TO HURT YOU EVER AGAIN.

  • JANET MITCHELL

@julieannz – THIS LADY COULD HAVE CALLED SOMEONE. LIKE I SAID IF I WOULD HAVE SEEN SHEP THERE FOR 1 DAY I WOULD HAVE MADE A PHONE CALL. IF NOBODY CAME I WOULD HAVE WENT OVER & GOT THAT POOR DOG ON DAY 3 & TOOK IT TO A VET & THEY COULD HAVE ARRESTED ME FOR TRESSPASSING AS I DON'T CARE NOBODY SHOULD HAVE LEFT SHEP LAYING THERE LIKE THAT WITHOUT DOING SOMETHING.

  • Admin

Like all of you, I cannot understand how anyone could do something like this. I cannot understand how people could sit by day after day as the poor dog suffered. There is no way I could have have left him there! I would have gladly held my hand out for handcuffs to have been able to rescue him from the horror of cruel starvation and dehydration, the pain of open wounds.
The pictures haunt me terribly! I followed this for a couple of weeks before I would even mange to write on it, it hurt so badly just to see the pain that Shepp was suffering.
I would gladly help to consign these heartless monsters to hell where they belong! I also cannot fathom how this torture is only a misdemeanor! Justice will NEVER be served here, ever!
The only small consolation is that Shepp will never have to suffer at the hands of these heartless bastards or anyone else again. He is assured of his place and will now know peace. I can still see him trying desperately to wag his tail and lick his rescuers hands after what he had been dealt at the hands of man. They are ever forgiving, the loyal and loving hearts of our canine companions… I am not and can never forgive anyone who could do something like this. They deserve the same mercy they showed… none!

  • JANET MITCHELL

@Admin – I STILL CRY EVERYTIME I READ THIS STORY OR GET A COMMENT ON IT. I WATCHED THE VIDEO ONCE BUT CAN'T WATCH IT AGAIN AS IT'S JUST TO PAINFUL TO SEE SHEP LAYING THERE STUGGLING TO GET UP. I JUST WONDER HOE THESE SCUMB BAGS WOULD FEEL IF THEY HAD TO LAY THERE IN THE SAME CONDITION.

  • Debbie Logue

HOW CAN ANYONE DO THIS?IF YOU CAN'T OR WON'T TAKE CARE OF YOUR PETS FIND SOMEONE THAT WILL.THEY ARE TOTALLY DEPENDANT ON THEIR OWNERS.THESE PEOPLE SHOULD BE PROSECUTED TO THE FULLEST EXTENT .I CANNOT IMAGINE THE PAIN THAT POOR DOG WENT THROUGH.I HOPE THERE IS A HEAVEN FOR HIM.

  • Vicki T

@julieannz – That neighbor is just as guilty as the scumbags who dumped the dog. She could have saved that dog's life, but she chose to do nothing!

  • JANET MITCHELL

@Vicki T – I TOTALLY AGREE. I WOULD HAVE DONE SOMETHING THATS FOR SURE.

  • Gina R.

I would like to add something else. Have all the people that live nearby gone blind or these pieces of SH.. in Corpus Christi are all heartless? Is impossible that no one knew what was happening to poor Shepp!

  • excalibur2009

These loosers should be made an example of. They should be tied in the same spot as Shep was and left to their fate.

    • 1lovemypets

      I fully agree with excalibur2009.

How would they like to be starved to death and left with

      dreadful injuries like Shep?

Shep was supposed to be looked after by these people but

      they couldn't care less.

If they couldn't look after Shep properly, then they should have contacted the Animal Welfare.

No excuse for ill treating a dog or any pet at all!!!

  • jbdean

I cannot sign the petition. The link you have (http://www.thepetitionsite.com/65/justice-for-shep-a-dog-starved-to-death?page=1) doesn't have anywhere to sign … it just lists all the names. I've used The Petition Site millions of times, so I know what they look like, but this one isn't working.

  • jbdean

Oh, I forgot to add. I tried clicking on the "SIGN PETITION!" and that doesn't work either. Where do I click to sign?

    • Admin - Deanna

The petition has been closed and the sentencing is done. If you click on the update link at the top of the story it will take you to the update. No justice!!
