See follow-up – Happy Ending for Spike the Abused Bulldog
And I thought this might be a quiet week. Last week we had the tootsiebell who tossed a puppy out into oncoming traffic. This week we have another woman who is a total abomination. Maria Aguilar of Queens, New York has been arrested on charges of beating a dog so badly that the animal is virtually blind in his right eye, has a hip fracture, broken leg, three broken teeth and injuries to his ears. One really pissed off neighbor decided enough was enough and got proof by using their cell phone camera to record the abuse.
And it’s a terrible, horrible, disgusting video. You can view it below but be warned, it is very disturbing!!
Spike is an 11 month old bulldog that has been abused repeatedly over the past few months. ASPCA investigators were called to Aguilar’s house on February 24 after witnesses reported hearing a dog crying. Aguilar originally denied beating the pup, but she allowed ASPCA officials to take the dog to their hospital.
The video shows Maria Aguilar tossing Spike across a patio and against an iron fence. He cowers down, Aguilar picks up an orange snow shovel and smacks the pup 
over the head. Then she throws him to the other side of the patio. You can hear the dog shrieking in the video.
The ASPC then discovered that her husband had taken the dog to veterinarians 12 times in the past seven months for treatment.
Twelve times in seven months? If this was the same veterinarian, we have a real issue with that practice. If I was to take my dog to the vet 12 times in seven months and they observed anything close to those types of injuries, I would be escorted out of the practice by the police – in handcuffs.
But Maria Aguilar’s husband offered a different story. Victor Estudillo, Aguilar’s husband, say Spike was fine when agents took custody of him. He says he’s spent about $7,000 in vet bills because Spike was a sickly dog, not a victim of abuse. And then her son states, on camera, “We don’t want her to go to jail – its just a dog.”
Just a dog. There you have it. I am not surprised to hear something like that coming out of this kids mouth after I see what his mother is capable of. That remark should tell you all you need to know about that family. This kid has just learned the basics from his mother.
Maria Aguilar denied beating Spike, but when she was confronted with the video, the jig was up. Maria Aguilar was arrested for aggravated animal cruelty and criminal possession of a weapon. She faces two felonies and four years in jail.
I don’t want to hear excuses. I don’t want to hear the dog was at the vet 12 times because he was “sickly”. I don’t want to hear you spent $7,000 on medical bills for poor Spike. I don’t want to hear she’s a good mother and shouldn’t go to jail. I don’t want to hear it’s “just a dog”.
I only want to hear what prison she goes to so I can mail her cellmate a shovel!
First of all , this woman needs to be hurt badly , second of all, the family is inbred , and third of all ,what the hell is the Vet doing not reporting this , man this is bad .Please somehow exterminate this useless stupid family
I will never understand people like that. What in the world could that sweet dog have ever done that could have made someone even consider beating her like that?
my mind can't accept brutality like that against a dog. i mean nothing a dog could do would merit treatment like that. i had a dog that litteraly pulled the siding off my house and made a hole into the kitchen, and we never even yelled at him, much less hit him. we changed the circumstance that brought that behaviour about. i hope she goes to prison cause she'll get the same kind of treatment once the others find out what she did.
I totally agree – one of our dogs is a Heeler. My goodness, we were oblivious to the needs of his breed when we got him and by golly he ate our walls. I don't mean he nibbled on the corners, I mean he somehow smushed his face up to eat the flat walls, not the corners! Once we realized he needed his butt outside playing fetch – we were all good after that.
So I don't really see what this dog could have done that somehow warranted a beating like that in her mind. Potty in the house? Chew something up? Bark? Or did it just look at her wrong? Poor Spike.
I hope someone beats the hell out that idiot for what she did that poor baby!
I saw this on Facebook, just the article. This video is so brutal and gut wrenching. Poor poor Spike, there is nothing in the world that that little boy could have done to deserve that type of treatment. This woman and her family are degenerates. What the hell is wrong with someone who could injure any animal like that? I am so grateful to whomever took that video, they are aces in my book, and what a great thing to have for prosecution of this scumbag. Andrea, I am with you with mailing a shovel to her cell mate, but honestly, do you think any woman in prison would be able to accept an animal abuser as a cell mate?

Oh Lord…..this is horrible! Poor, poor, Spike. I do hope he heals from these horrific, cruel wounds he got at the hands of this horrible moran B****! Damn! I despise these excuses, over and over again. AND, what the hell is wrong with that vet??? Are they blind at that clinic? Okay, not only should this B*** be fixed to never reproduce again, but her idiot husband and ignorant son should also be fixed to never again be able to reproduce. I am so sickened by this. OMG I just watched the video. Forget what I said earlier!!! This woman should be shot!!! DAMN HER TO HELL!!!! DAMN!! She didn't just hit poor Spike over the head with that shovel, she smashed it into his face with the front edge of it. How horribly painful. No Andrea….do not send the shovel to the cell mate. Send it to me and send that, that, thing, that, POS, that filth on the earth to me. I will take care of it. We shovel a lot of snow here, so….. never mind. I have my own shovel!! Damn her!
There are not enough words to describe this women! Thank God though someone had the common sense to do something about it. Poor Spike, I hope he gets better.
Thank God for Spikes' guardian angel. This is just plain disturbing. The child is a product of his environment. If this generation that is coming up now doesn't get an education in curelty, morality, kindness and caring about all creatures, ALL we are going to have to worry about is the failure of man-kind. I am afraid to watch the video!! Bulldog puppies aren't cheap – why even buy one if you are going to treat it badly rather than with love? The kid and the mom have to learn some respect and humanity.

i hope this woman rots in hell. That is horrible! I hope somebody sends the prison a shovel so the people around ehr can beat one with it and expierience the pain she gave to that poor dog. The whole family is sick and deserves to suffer with the people who hate them now.
Forget the shovel…a pick axe would be far more appropriate. As for jail and big time for this crazed inhumane sub species, I hope everyone here has written to the DA and the Judge to prosecute zealously, cut NO DEALS and punish her to the fullest extent of the law.
In addition, as Andrea points out, the name of this vet should be known far and wide, for not suspecting abuse and notifying local cruelty agencies. Heaven forbid that this vet is not a pedicatrician.

The veterinarians' licenses need to be revoked! They failed to protect Spike!

The news shows that Maria Aguilar lives on 80th St in East Elmhurst, Queens NY. The houses on this block are very close together. The baby dog went through months of abuse which indicates that there were pains and howls that were heard. People need to report abuse immediately.Maria Aguilar engaged in a course of criminal behavior for 11 months. Thanks for this information on Aguilar as well as the comments that people need to report animal abuse. Thank Heavens for Spike that some neighbor finally had the courage and opportunity to catch this on video. Please go to the updated link below on this story. The charge is only one of Aggravated Cruelty and only carries with it a MAXIMUM sentence of TWO years. We need emails and more emails and calls to Queen's County DA's office so there are no deals and she goes to trial. And you are so right, I am hoping, along with many others, that they can find a way to also charge the Husbdand. Perhaps he will continue to LIE and try to defend her and they can get him on perjury.

Maria Aguilar was CHARGED WITH TWO FELONIES, ANIMAL CRUELTY AND CRIMINAL POSSESSION OF A WEAPON. THESE TWO INVOLVE FOUR YEARS IN PRISON. Also, they ne.ed to upgrade the charges and also include making false statements to a police office . maria aguilar lied and then confessed. I HOPE MARIA AGUILAR IS SENTENCED TO 4 YEARS IN PRISON ON MONDAY, APRIL 12.
We are simply going on the response that many of us received from the Director of Communications, Kevin Ryan, from the Queen's Coounty District Attorney's office. If you will go to the updated site you will see what he has written in his response. If he is incorrect and it is a four years then that is great…. but if it is two and two (two for each count) then the likelihood is IF she is convicted and IF the court sentences her to the maximum, they will allow those sentences to run concurrently. Even if we get all the best of luck it means that she will not see much jail time. So it is why there is a new call for more emails and calls and to keep it up so that there is no deal cut.
I almost didn't watch the video because I wasn't sure I would be able to handle it. I did gasp when I saw this poor excuse for a human being abusing this poor little dog. I hope the Judge throws the book at her. I also believe in the saying, "what goes around, comes around" and it can't happen soon enough for me. I hope Spike makes a full recovery and is adopted by a wonderful new family. I'm glad the neighbor got this horrendous act on video.

I would like to know why the Vet did nothing to even have anyone look into this!? There is not excuse for things like this to happen. I don't see anything where this kind of behavior is justified. I think she needs to have a dose of her own medicine. I think someone needs to give the entire family a dose of it as well. "It's JUST a dog"??? What kind of statement is that. Thank god for a neighbor who thought enough to get it on video.

FIRST, I am a Hispanic female, been doing rescue for a few years. I know Hispnic culture well and it is not uncommon for kids and adults to refer to a pet as "just a dog" There's a need for more education on animal care. Sadly, many Latin Countries don't even have a Humane Society or animal protection laws and dogs are beaten regularly. They are kept outside, kicked, sometimes not fed. A more thorough check is necessary when adopting out to anyone that thinks "it's just a dog". I hope she is jailed for a long time.

i saw the video,and I read the story.It make me very anger and sorrow. It's very important to forbid that these horribles people can adopt others dogs.They always take it out their frustration against poor innocent animals

God Bless all the animals who's suffering we will never know about. I can only imagine how many animals are treated this way – only behind closed doors. I can't imagine the constant fear they must live in. We live in a horribly cruel world.

I am Hispanic, so this is not about racism. When growing up in my Country I saw the abuse, the kicking of strays, the vendors throwing hot water at them, I was just a child, nothing I could say, and no adults did either. I can tell you that in after this many years, many people have the same mentality in the Hispanic culture, "it's just a dog". I would not adopt out an animal to the majority of Hispanics. Many that come to the States change somewhat, but that reasoning still prevails, a dog is nothing more than trash. Surprised they even took the dog to the Vet. Maybe they were hoping to stud him out, because I really can't see them spending money on a vet without a motive behind it, and it's not about helping the dog.
We are all the hardest on our own cultures. Animal cruelty and "its just a dog" is widespread throughout the world. Some worse than others. It's really hard on the good animal loving people in every nation. For some, the uphill battle just gets worse.
