Update 4/22/09 – Update on Rex, Dog Taped to the Refrigerator
Update 4/16/09 – Woman Who Taped Dog to Fridge May Also Be Facing Drug Charges
Ok, we got another nutjob here who thinks abusing a defenseless animal is the right way to take out her aggressions and anger on her boyfriend. Domestic abuse and animal abuse go hand in hand yet again.
Police responding to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment in the 2900 block of East Aurora Avenue around 5 a.m. Tuesday were told by Boulder, CO woman, Abby Toll, that there was a dog taped to the fridge. Police found an 8-month-old Shiba Inu puppy bound with packing tape, hair ties and a plastic bag, taped upside down to the side of the refrigerator.
University of CO student, 20-year-old Abby Toll and boyfriend 21-year-old Bryan Beck had arrived at his apartment on Monday to find that the puppy, Rex, had done his business throughout the apartment. Toll, claiming the puppy has bit her days previous told Beck to get rid of the puppy, they argued but later made up.
The next day Toll attempted to treat a wound on the puppy’s tail and the puppy growled and bared it teeth at her. That was when she decided to teach Beck a lesson. Using hair bands and packing tape, she tied the puppy’s legs, snout and tail and taped the puppy bound puppy upside down to the side of the refrigerator.
When Beck saw the dog, he told her she was sick and to take it down.
“No, you are sick for not caring enough about me to get rid of the dog,” she responded.
An argument ensued in which Toll is supposed to have slapped Beck and thrown objects at him. Someone overhearing the commotion called the police.
“There’s a dog taped to the fridge,” she reportedly told an officer who responded to the call. “I know this looks bad. We were going to get rid of him anyway. We usually don’t do this.”
The puppy was finally rescued and appeared to be in severe pain.
“When Officer (Richard) French got the first layer of tape off, I observed the dog’s paws were bound together with several black elastic hair ties,” one of the responding officers wrote. “There were also hair ties bound around the dog’s ears and snout. When the elastic hair ties were removed from the dog’s paws, there was a large indention where the bands were, and his paws were swollen. Rex just lay motionless, but breathing.”
The puppy, Rex, and a Chihuahua named Peanut belonging to Toll were both removed and taken to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley.
Toll was arrested and charged with felony animal cruelty and domestic violence, misdemeanor charges of criminal tampering and third-degree assault. She was being held at Boulder County Jail in lieu of a $12,500 bond. The boyfriend was also arrested, with misdemeanor counts of false imprisonment and obstruction of a telephone because he wouldn’t let Toll leave the apartment and removed the card from her cell phone so that she couldn’t make phone calls.
Again and again I ask, “What the hell is wrong with people to do something like this?” and there is never an answer. What would inspire a 20-year-old college student to bound a puppy and tape it to something. There has got to be a few screws loose there. This is another case where we can at least be thankful there are no children and the the puppy will be okay.
Sadly, it will probably be another slap on the wrist after the charged are plea bargained down to nothing. Maybe having her face and name plastered all over the internet will at least give some kind of justice here. So my friend, spread the story around. There’s no doubt she did it. One of these days justice will catch up with people who do things like this… we can only hope.
