Woman Who Buried Dog Alive Gets Jail Time
Update 2/3/09 – Jail for Man Who Buried Dog Alive
On October 24, Susan Johnson, 50, and father, Hyrum Long, 75, of Forest Grove, OR, bashed their 14 year-old lab, Molly, in the head with a hammer and buried her alive up to her neck in their back yard. Then they went out to supper as the poor dog whined and screamed in pain.
Police came and dug up the barely living, severely injured dog and took it to the humane society where it was humane euthanized due the the gravity of its injuries and extremely poor overall health.
Father and daughter told police the Molly had been sick for week and they didn’t have the money to have her euthanized so they did it themselves.
“I went out and I took a hammer and hit her and I thought I’d killed her pretty good,” said Hyrum Long.
Both were arrested, Long was charged with aggravated animal abuse, a felony, Johnson with first-degree animal neglect, a misdemeanor.
A necropsy report from the Oregon Humane Society said, aside from the horrendous head wound, the dog had a chronic skin disease, body sores and starvation, actually it said “long term lack of nutrition and chronic starvation.” It found indications the dog had not eaten for at least four days.
On Monday, Johnson pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree animal neglect before Washington County Circuit Judge Rick Knapp.
The was sentenced to 90 days in jail, two years’ formal probation 100 hours of community service and cannot own any animals for five years.
Her father, Hyrum Long, who actually wielded the hammer, will be in court Friday for a preliminary hearing.
I have to admit that I am actually surprised at the sentence. I had expected probation and a fine at the most so I’m pleased to see actual incarceration.
I don’t care what kind of reasoning someone gives, there is no reason or excuse for what they did to that poor dog. The last weeks of her life where hell and the very end the culmination of that.
We’ll see what happens Friday when Long goes before the judge….
